The Carriage Wheels Go Round and Round

The cats out of the bag - historical fiction.

Grandma, always told the same story of her dear friend Milly. Engraved in her 80 year old memory bank, was the last painful image of the horse drawn carriage moving slowly away, taking her best friend away from her living room parlor, in a wooden box. The two were inseparable up to that point.

Carriage wheels going round and round until she could not stand it any longer, leaving a trail of dust in the distance. “Milly . . . Milly . . . Milly . . come back . . .” She wailed, as she ran after the carriage full speed. It was in vain, she couldn’t catch up, and finally dropped to the ground in exhausted grief, grasping her seared heart. That was the last she had ever seen of Milly. It was so unfair.

She slowly walked back to the house, after the carriage disappeared around the corner, into a speck of dust. Her dusty face was streaked with tears, that turned into a damp mud. It was a long and lonely walk back, down a road that was always traveled with the two girls running, laughing and exploring.

Now some 70 years later, any one that had ever known Milly, was long gone. It’s only a matter of time before it will be like neither of them ever existed.

So what does it matter now, if she discloses the fact that Milly’s death was no accident. She did not slip and fall from the hay mound and hit her head as everyone believed. She was running from the mean old hired hand, who was trying to take advantage of her. He finally managed to catch her by the arm, and was forcing her down into the hay. That’s when she twisted and turned away and went right over the edge of the loft.

“I seen this right with my own eyes, and the hired hand then turned to me and said: ‘ If you say anything – you’re next’. For 70 years I was silenced by his threat and the grief of Milly’s passing. I only allowed myself to see the carriage wheels go around and round all these years, instead of the hay loft incident. Which I cannot repress any longer. “ Milly softly spoke to her granddaughter.

“Once the cat is out of the bag, there is no telling where he might go. All our family trees now are forever tarnished by this murder.” She continued “It’s a secret that should never have been told.”
