Sienna looked around her room at all the work her Mother, her sister and her best friend had done.
The carpet was now replaced with wooden floors, and the furniture was moved around in such a way that she could practice dance in her chair.
She had not expected them to go to such an effort, but was more than grateful that they did. She found herself fighting back tears, tears of joy.
Lord I am so blessed and so unworthy of these blessings, but you are good to me Lord, and have blessed me with people in my life that truly care. I am rich in all things that matter Lord, and I thank you for that.
A radio with an ipod dock sat on the dresser next to her television. This was new, and Sienna was both shocked and blessed. She had been eyeing that particular system for a long time, and here it was.
“Mom are you sure this isn’t a bit too much?” Sienna asked. “I love it all, but with the medical bills can we afford it.”
“Sienna I have money put away everything will be fine, and I am back to work now, so why don’t you let me worry about that okay?”
“I love it Mom, thank you.”
“You’re welcome sweetie. I am glad you didn’t let your dream of dancing die, you are a great dancer always have been, and now I am going to leave you to practice. Dinner will be done in about an hour I will call you then.”
“Okay thank you Mom. I really do appreciate this, and I love you. Thank you Miranda, and Kelsea you guys are the best.”
“Mind if we stay in and watch?” Miranda asked.
“Not at all, I would love to have you guys watch me. It certainly is less daunting than being on the stage.”
“I couldn’t begin to imagine. I freeze just giving an oral report in class.” Miranda said. She was fine when she was talking amongst friends, but Sienna had seen her best friend freeze more than once, and saw how terrified she had been when having to speak in front of a group. Sienna had done everything she could to help her best friend and often the encouragement and the practice runs they did, did end up helping.
“Miranda you were a lot better than you were before.”
“Yes I guess after twelve years of school, you finally have to give in, and accept that getting in front of class happens.”
“Yeah it does.”
Sienna flipped on a Carmen song on her I-Pod. Carmen was a bit of an old school Christian rapper, but Sienna loved his music especially the message it portrayed. And even in dance, especially in dance she wanted to praise the Lord.
When Sienna danced, nothing around her mattered, just the music, the movement and her giving the Lord her praises. She was a dancer, and always had been for as long as she could remember, the doctors had said she would most likely never walk again, they had said nothing about dancing again, and she was going to prove to everyone she was capable. She was going to prove to herself that she could still dance.
She no longer did ballet, not because she couldn’t but she was being led to something with more rhythm, more beat, that’s why she was having Kirsten help her with some Modern dance, a mixture of hip hop and other forms, and she loved it. She had never been a huge fan of the hip hop music, until she had discovered Christian rap, and then she began to love it. Kirk Franklin, DC Talk, Carmen, she listened to them all and Kirsten played them in dance class instead of the other types of rap. Kirsten refused to compromise her faith for dance, and Sienna felt the same way. Dance and faith could go together, and the truth was it should.
“You really have a gift Sienna. I wish I could dance like you.” Miranda said.
“It’s taken a lot of practice, years, but if you wanted to dance Miranda you could.”
“I’m not so sure about that. I have no rhythm.”
“You won’t hear any arguments from me there.” Sienna said jokingly and soon Miranda had joined in, they were having a pillow fight.
I haven’t done something so silly, that felt so good since before I was shot Lord. A pillow fight I know is childish, but we were having fun, and it was something normal. Whatever normal means any way.
Before long Sienna, and Miranda and Kelsea were all laughing, enjoying themselves and having a good time. Sienna felt grateful to be surrounded by these beautiful people, who had gone out of their way to make sure her dreams of dancing had not died. These were the people who had supported her through everything.
Lord I am so blessed and I know that, when I was in the hospital I saw patients going week in and week out just hoping and praying for someone to come and see them, but I never had to worry about that, Mom, Kelsea and Miranda were always there for me. I always knew they cared.
It had broken Sienna’s heart to see so many patients, go without visitors, some were even younger than she was, and she knew that she could not make it through this without her support system so she wondered how these patients were going to make it through the changes they would face.
Warning to Rich Oppressors
1 Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming on you. 2 Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. 4 Look! The wages you failed to pay the workers who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. 5 You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter.[a] 6 You have condemned and murdered the innocent one, who was not opposing you.
Patience in Suffering
7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!
10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.
The Prayer of Faith
13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.
19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
After reading the word and practicing dance, Sienna came to the realization that she could do something to help some of the patients still in the hospital. Spinal cord injury victims who so often fell into despair, she could go in and show them that someone did care, and that despite being in a chair, they could do something with their lives, and if nothing else she could simply offer a hand of friendship.
Lord is the mission you are calling me on right here? Are you calling me to do this?
“Girls dinner is ready.” Sienna’s Mother called, drifting Sienna from her thoughts, and back to the reality at the moment.
“Good I am starved.” Kelsea said breaking the quiet that had grown over the three girls.
“I am too actually.” Sienna admitted. “I am so glad to be back home, the hospital’s cooking was disgusting. I hate hospital food.”
“I can’t say as I blame you, but those days are behind you, and have been for a couple of months now.”
“And believe me I am grateful for that.”
“I know we all are Sienna.”
“Thank you guys for everything you did for me. I know I am blessed.”
“We all are Sienna.”
Lord thank you for giving me the family I have, and the people in my life. Thank you for allowing me to be blessed in the ways that I am. I know I have no right to take those things for granted, and I try not to Lord, but I know too that I am not perfect. I need you Lord, to help me in my weakness, and I need to continue to sing your praises Lord through all of this. I am blessed by the many things you have done in my life, and even in my weakest moments I know that I can sing your praises.
Surrounded with her family, at the family table, and the people she most cared about. Sienna thought about her blessings, about her wealth. The wealth that truly mattered, the people in her life and most importantly in her relationship with the Lord. Sienna knew without the Lord she could not make it through any of this.
“I think we should go visit some of the patients in the rehab center, and visit some of the patients, some don’t get many visitors some none at all, and going through something as traumatic as a spinal cord injury is difficult enough with people in your lives.”
“Sienna that sounds like a great idea.”
