Fearful but longing romances and an interesting twist to 'the end' of human civilization.

Emma-Jade
She couldn't be sure about her exact location, alongside a highway that way nearly fifty feet below her, keeping to the trees. It wasn't safe here anymore... it was nomad's land, and most weren't likely to be friendly. But this was where she'd wanted to be...
She had to stop herself from letting her mind drift into that part of her recent past, but the images came anyway; her heartwrenching scream as she realized the giant shard of concrete was falling directly toward her mother's head, the dull thud it made against her skull... and then blood. Oh the blood... She'd smiled at her through the red that seemed to never stop flowing over her face. "I got close Em, you have to go." She had whispered on her dying breath, and then she'd felt her mother's body go limp in her lap... Those are the memories she has now, any before that just seemed like so far away, so far in the past - probably because they had always been on the run.
She supressed a sigh as she eyed the twists and turns of the highway below me, wondering just how much further there was to go. She almost thought that she recalled this same pattern of road in one of her grandmother's photo albums; She was getting closer then? Yes, I must be. She thought wearily. There was a possibility of closure then, the only objective moving her now. Though it'd crossed her mind - and she wasn't overly afraid - that she wouldn't live long after she found this place; she'd already accepted it.
It was a place called Claro and it was supposedly one of the only places that would be left in this area, the region from which a lot of her relatives had orbitted around and one point or another. It was a place they had all loved, and a place that she'd never gotten to see in person. She was trying to be optomistic about being alive, about almost having reached her destination, but all she could feel now was the searing pain of her stomach trying to collapse into itself from hunger... She could feel the weeks worth of dried sweat covering her, she'd been kidding herself simply rinsing off quickly in the few small creeks she'd found, she'd been too eager to continue the journey.
She wanted to use the excuse that she was only just seventeen to justify how impatient and irrational she was, but that seemed more petulant than anything else... She wished her mum wer still with her...

 Benjamin
"Don't start Becca." He told his sister, not expecting an answer, his tone was final.
Rebecca glared up at him with pain in her innocent and tortured eyes, "So you're allowed to walk around sulking and being a jerk after a search but I'm not even allowed to search?" SHe hollered at him.
He just sat there, staring out over the lake feathered in a thin line of evergreens and the odd leaf-bearing tree. Rebecca was not to search, she knew that, a response was unnecessary.
The girl continued to stand there, fuming. And after a minute or so it seemed like she was about to turn and walk out, but she paused facing the door of the House. "They were my family too Ben." She murmered, and then shoved her hands in her pockets and stalked off to her room.
He almost laughed, did she expect that to hurt him? He thought bitterly, she didn't know him very well if she thought that some attempt at a guilt trip wouldn't work on him. With a shocking kind of pain he realized that that was only because he wouldn't let her know him well enough.
