A boy gets a baby chicken for his birthday.

Small, yellow, with soft, fuzzy fur (or feathers?), soft as a ball of cotton.  Big, beady black eyes.  Orange legs and feet with matching bill.  A fuzzy, cute little ball of adorableness.

That's what I got for my birthday yesterday.  A baby chicken.  All of a sudden, I was responsible for the care of a poor, helpless little chicken.

Not to worry, though.  I live on a farm; I am used to helping animals, both large and small.  Now that I am older (ten), I feel I am able to handle the responsibilities geared to caring for 'em, not to mention a baby chicken.

I have named the chicken "Peep".  That's all he does: peeps at me, demanding attention, or perhaps, more'n likely, food.  He is the cutest little thing I have ever seen!

The only time Peep is quiet is when he is with his mama or with me at night.  He sleeps in a lined box and I make sure to get him food or water when he cries out.  So far, no problem, but during the day, I take him outside, so he can be with his Mama, and then I get a break while I do my chores or during the fall to spring season, go to school.  Now that school's out for the summer, I can devote more time to my chores and taking care of my new little pet.

I don't know what the future holds for little Peep, but I plan on making sure he grows up into a fine specimen of a rooster and show him at the fair in the fall before school starts up again.  Maybe he'll win me a blue ribbon.  Or some cash money.  That would be cool!

Baby chickens are so cute. It's when they grow up that they become ugly (at least to me). Well done, Karen!
