A boy is caught driving while intoxicated ; he gets into a wreck involving several vehicles. This is his story, as told by his younger sister, who is 13 years old.

If I had known that Timothy, my big brother, was gonna get blotto'ed before getting behind the wheel, I would have done anything in the world to stop him, and so would my parents.

Now because of his irresponsible actions, Tim is in jail and has a permanent mark on his record.  I don't know how long he will be there, but he caused several families a lot of heartache.

Tim got into a bad car wreck earlier today.  He apparently went with some friends who had some beer in their vehicle and the one guy talked Tim into drinking several bottles of beer.  Well, Tim got pretty soused and as he was driving, he drove into two vehicles, first one, then another.  He emerged from the accident scene with barely a scratch or mark on him; several of the occupants in the other cars weren't so lucky.  Two kids, ages 3 and 6, were badly hurt, and a woman who was pregnant suffered several fractures and the possible loss of her unborn child (a boy).

The pregnant woman and the two kids are all in the hospital, recovering from their injuries.  It is unkonwn as of this time whether the woman's baby boy survived.

When Tim had a breathalyzer test, he was found to have twice the legal limit of alcohol allowed in hs system.  He was immediately arrested after he started arguing with the police, was handcuffed, and thrown into the back of a waiting police car, where he would then more than likely go to jail.

That is exactly what happened.  When Mom and Dad came back roughly about an hour ago, they were both in tears.  They told me what had happened.  I was shocked: I never thought that Tim, my good looking, athletic brother, would do something so incredibly stupid.  I don't know what possessed him to do such a thing but now he has to live with this for the rest of his life and suffer the consequences of his actions.

I know Tim wants to prove to Mom and Dad that he's old enough to be a man, but if you ask me, he acted more like a child who doesn't know any better.  How could he do this??  Now people will see him and call him a criminal or an alcoholic; meanwhile, they will probably tease me and call me "Sister of the Drunk" or worse names.  I don't know if I could live with all of that.

I just pray to God that the pregnant woman's unborn baby boy makes it; if not, there's the possibility of my brother being charged with manslaughter or worse.  And I pray that the baby isn't born with any sort of physical or mental damage.  That would be too much for me to take!

"Bad company corrupts good character." Often, young people get into trouble because of peer group influence and the consequences get really heavy and tragic, and too late for remedy. Life can be gone in an instant and driving is serious business, it can never be taken for granted as when one gets on the road, lives are always at stake. Your story tells us all this all too common fatal "mistake" - yet if we really think about it - it is not a mistake but a wrong choice. Heartbreaking and truly devastating story.

Hi Karen,

Good story and well needed to help stop the senseless death and injury from DWI's. It was hard to read since my daugher was killed at 14 by a DWi which is whart my book is about. It almost 30 years and it never gets much better for all who loved her.
