Don't we just love the variety of personalities children have?
Imaginary dialogue between Colin and Jennica regarding inheriting my 63 journals after I pass along:
CJM: "Okay, Jenn, you take 33 of them and I'll take 30."
JRM: "Why should I have to take more than you? You're the responsible one."
CJM: "Because I will be traveling the world and I don't want tonnage to worry
about."
JRM: "Well, I'm traveling the world, too. You think because I'm a girl I should
be more nesty and want extra stuff?"
CJM: "No. How could you even decifer "extra" stuff in your clutter anyway?"
JRM: "You don't even know what you're talking about. Maybe I was messy
in my life before, but now I am traveling the world, too, and I've learned
a few things."
CJM: "Let's not argue about your messyness. This is about what to do with
Mom's journals."
JRM: "Okay, fine. I'll take all of them."
CJM: "Why?"
JRM: "Because."
CJM: "And your point is?"
JRM: "You will always be too busy to read any of them anyway."
CJM: "Like you won't? I'm not the one who is too busy to floss my teeth."
JRM: "Not fair."
CJM: "Okay. I'm not the one who doesn't even know what's in my closet."
JRM: "Also not fair."
CJM: "If anyone should take them all, of the two of us, it should be me, I'm
afraid."
JRM: "Okay, they're all yours."
CJM: "I didn't mean it."
JRM: "Then what?"
CJM: "We each take 31 and we tear the last one in half."
JRM: "Sure, that would be just like you cutting the odd M&M in half
with your Swiss Army knife."
CJM: "And it would be just like you to eat the odd M&M when I wasn't
looking."
JRM: "Colin. Remember we are talking about Mom's journals, not
childhood grudges."
CJM: "These are not grudges, Jenn, they are pure truth."
JRM: "Well, the truth is we should donate them to a publisher, like
Warner Brothers or something."
CJM: "Ummm, brilliant, Jenn."
JRM: "And you have a better idea?"
CJM: "Yes. I will buy you a high-speed scanner and you scan all the
pages into the computer."
JRM: "Why should I be the one to spend the rest of my life scanning pages?
You are so lazy! You think your time is so much more important
than mine."
CJM: "No, lazy people don't know what's in their closets and my time isn't
more important, it just moves faster than yours."
JRM: "Oh sure, Colin, and OCD people not only have their closets memorized,
but color coded and alphabetized and probably date marked in case
the shoes expire."
CJM: "Uh, Jenn......Mom's journals?"
JRM: "Okay, fine....31 1/2.....happy?"
CJM: "Happy."

You have conjured up many thoughts. First, it's a lesson in sharing that young people have to learn by experience. My twin brother and I had to share everything. After many arguments, I usually let him get the first look at anything we shared.
I can't believe you have all those journals! I have some unopened ones that I plan to give to the university library. I regret that I had old family portraits from my grandmothers circa 1890–1950That I gave my sister because I thought I could no longer take care of them. I have scanned every photo that I have for the family and only hope that she or her sons scan the portraits for our family's history.
Love it.

| Hah! Actually it might even be worse that that, Diana. I dread to think what my children's conversation would be like. Shudder! |
