Ghost In The Asylum

Peter wakes one Saturday morning and looks at an innocent blue sky, not one cloud ruined his picture, raises his head and lifts his thin body out of bed; he can taste the bad breathe through his mouth, "Yuck!" He says.

Heads into the bathroom and brushes his mouth  with tooth paste, with his mouth refreshed walks into the living room and looks out the front window and the old movie house remains boarded up, shuts the curtains.

His cell phone begins ringing he answers the call, it's his girl friend Patti, she says. "Are you ready?"

He says. "I will be in five minutes."
"I'll see you in five minutes." She Says.

"okay!" He says. Hangs up the phone. Patti and him plan on doing some sight seeing today in the historic district of the Woodbridge Neighborhood in Detroit, Michigan. throws on a pair of shorts and pulls over his shoulders an old t-shirt he pulls from the drawer. The door bells rings and it is Patti smiling. "Come on in!" He says.

She steps into the apartment and looks around, Peter is a neat freak and nothing is out of place this is what she liked about him, from the magezine rack beside the couch to his files in his office cabinet, nothing looked messy.
"Lets go!" She says. "my bike is waiting!"

"I have to put on my shoes, brush my hair and get my wallet and key to the front door." Peter Says.

Peter returns to the bathroom while Patti takes a seat on the couch, he quickly brushes his short brown hair and dabs a small amount of deoderant under his arm pits, sets the tube down, and walks over to his bedrrom and grabs his wallet and key to the front door, sits down on the bed and pulls his running shoes from underneath the bed and puts them on, walks into his office and grabs his camer and puts it inside the bag, strapped to the back seat of his moutain bike, whips the front around and heads out of his office.

"Lets go!" He says. Walks out the front door Patti follows closely behind him, walks down the steps while he locks the front door. Turning around and one look around the neighborhood and the only thing he can see is neglect and old abandoned buildings from the auto industry going bust, further ahead he can even see the grand houses of the Woodbridge neighborhood falling apart, the red brick facade sticks out like a bad dream in the memory.

"Do you have your camera?" He says.

"Yes!" She says with a smile. "Lets ride stud!"
Peter lifts his bike and walks down the steps and sets his bike down on the sidewalk and reaches over and places a kiss on Patti's lips, her look is intent.

He pulls away and gets on his bike and follows Patti down the street toward the Woodbridge Neighborhood. A black crow lands on the top of a telephone up ahead, he points it out to Patti and the Black Crow flies on, further ahead a homeless bum pisses on the side walk and graffti covers the abandoned factory, wall to wall, it was so thick with graffti that he couldn't see the red brick.

They stop at a downtown store and get a drink Grand River Avenue is only a block away, he will turn right and stop and take some pictures of the abandoned mansions that litter the historical district, gulp down the cool liquid and put the half full bottles in the back pouch, ride on a little further and turn right onto Grand River Avenue, stop and take pictures of a old mansion, it is huge, probably five thousand square feet or more, he will make blog with the pictures for people to see this old histoical district decline, ride down Trumball Street.

Further down, he sees a red brick victorian mansion, he stops and pulls out his digital camera, Patti pulls up behind him and stops runs her hand up his back, this is comforting, aims and snaps a shop, from around the house a women walks from the back yard and stops, kneels down and begins pulling weeds  from the flower bed.

"Nice house!" Peter says.

"Oh, high! I didn't see you standing there!" The women says. Turning her head toward them."Yes! It is! My father owned it he was an engineer." Returns to pulling weeds from the flower bed, a black cat stands and stetches and runs into the house the front door is open.

"He wants to start a blog about the old abandoned mansions in the Woodbridge neighborhood." Patti says.

"Well, he doesn't have to ride far." The women says without taking her eyes away from the weeds she pulls out of the ground. Finally, turning. She says. "I have old pictures of the neighborhood in its hay day, would you care to look at them?"

Peter and Patti accept the women's invitation and walk toward her. The women stands and takes off her gloves and Peter and Patti shake her hand.

Peter didn't feel right he could feel it in her touch, looks at Patti. Under his breath says "Maybe we should move on this place is a little creepy for me."

Patti looks at him surprised Peter normally is the bold person to do things but is quick to point things out, protest in a second, the women seemed harmless to anyone not along two adults in their prime of their life.
The women pays no attention to Peter's behavior and walks the two up the steps thru the front door and over to the parlor.

"Would like something to drink while you look at the pictures?" The women says.

"That will be nice." Peters says. Patti nodes her head yes.

Peter looks closely at the pictures on the mantel they are in mint condition the person standing on the pourch must be her father, he smiles for the picture, along the mantel other pictures of the neighborhood are in the same condition with an educated gaze to their mannerism then something spooky happens the black cat runs by their feet, he jumps a foot in the air, Patti screams, loudly.

They notice the women doesn't return with the drinks, the two head toward the door and a moaning sound comes from the upstairs, it sounds like people talking and screaming, it sounds like choas, it sounds like a mad house they run to the front door and try opening the front door, it is locked, he struggles with the door handle for a better grip, lifting his body off of the floor nothing, they head toward the back of the house but the scary mansion turns dark, pitch black, like night time coming early on this day. The voices go silent.

"Hello! Can someone let us out that isn't crazy?" Peter says. He can feel Patti's trembling hand against his. No one comes from the kitchen.

He finds the kitchen door and opens the door and something dry and sticky covers his hands then he feels a cold spot brushing his face, he reaches up and the temperature feels cold to the touch, he backs away and runs into Patti. You need to move too!" He says.

Patti is too scared to move anywhere this was her idea in the first place, backs away so that Peter doesn't fall over her.

"Lets find the back door." He says, she agrees. They walk further to the back of the house then he runs into a bed in the middle of the floor, metal bowls crash to the floor, he pushes it out of the way and kicks the bowls to the side. Patti says. "Peter! are you okay!"

"Yes! I'm okay!" He says.

"Something might be walking behind me. I Can feel the cold breath on my neck."

Peter stops and checks behind Patti and doesn't feel anything unusuall, nothing! They walk on, shortly after, Peter doesn't feel Patti behind him any longer this scares him, he walks back and doesn't hear Patti at all, he can see the back door wide open, the sun light feels the empty space, he looks into the haunted mansion it is empty except for a bunch of cob webs, no sign of Patti at all, not even foot steps on the dusty floor, he runs out the back door and to the front of the house, looks up and sees Patti, standing in the window, wearing a nurses uniform, he runs back to the back door, but it is closed then he hears Patti's loud laughter, it is a crazy ghostly sound coming from inside then silence. He rides home knowing he has lost the most precious thing to his life, today. Forever.
