A woman copes with living with breast cancer. This is her story.

Don't feel sorry for me when you learn of my story.  I have survived; that's good enough for me!

My name is Helen Cathleen Thibodeaux.  I live in Chauvin, Louisiana, straight in the heart of Cajun Country.  I have been married to my beau, my high school sweetheart, George, for the past 40 years.  We have five children between us: George, Jr. ("Tee-George"), Georgette, Gianna, Glendon, and Gemma.  All are grown and have given us 14 grandchildren between them.

I had a great life prior to BC (Before Cancer).  That was two years ago.  I worked, took care of my elderly maman (she has since died), helped out at the church on Wednesdays with the kids, and baked.  Then I got sick with cancer and just recently hit remission.  I had my last treatment a month ago and have to see the doctor every month, to make sure it ain't coming back.  I also had my breasts removed six months ago and haven't felt better.

I am determined to beat this thing.  I want to see my grandbabies grow up; I want to be a good grandmaman to them.  I am determined to be there for my children whenever they need me.  I must be doing something right 'cause thanks to the Good Lord (Le Bon Dieu), I am still here, even with having my breasts removed.  I am also letting my hair grow out.  Right now it's pretty short, but it'll grow out eventually.  I am grateful I have hair again!

I was bald for over a year; it feels goot to run a comb or brush through my hair again and to be able to shampoo it!

I don't know what the future holds, but as long as I remain cancer free, then that's all I care about!  I want to be one of those who said they survived cancer; I am not about to let my cancer take over my life!  No, ma'am!
