Miak Ugliamakagak continues his story, about life on the Canadian tundra with his family and friends.

Hello from Nunavut, Canada!

This is your friend, Miak Ugliamakagak.  I am doing well; hope this finds you the same.

Sorry for not writing; fishing and hunting, going to school, and taking care of my younger brother Suhe (9) and sister Felicia (7) (as well as little cousin, Taniq, who is 3) keeps me grounded, as does taking care of our twenty dogs.  I do not have much free time, but when I do, I try to take all the advantage of it as I possibly can.

The weather was nice, but now the days are getting shorter and the tundra is turning into fall colors.  Really spectacular, if you ask me.  And the northern lights are appearing in our skies once again.  When it was daylight out you could not see the lights; now that the days are waning, the lights are appearing almost nightly.  I like watching the lights; it reminds me of our dead ancestors who now dance among the lights.

I am in grade seven; it is hard to learn English.  I'd rather the classes be in all Inupiat, which is the language of my people, the Inuit.  English has so many rules and it is confusing a lot of the time; I hate it!! (I can write English better than speak it; I speak Inupiat at home, but at school, I talk in half English, half Inupiat.)

This weekned, Father has promised to take Grandfather, Suhe, and myself on an elk hunt.  Good; we could use some fresh food and a really big elk can feed our village for weeks.  We use every part of the elk; we don't waste anything.  That is the way of our people.

I hope we get several big sized elk!

Well, I hate to go, but it is time for bed; we have school in the morning.  I will write in here again another time; sorry it's been so long since my lsat entry.  I just am not much of a writer; never have been, nor will I ever be.  Take care; may the spirits bless you!

~Miak U. :)
