A woman with Down syndrome's story, as told by her little sister.

I have an older sister, Laura Dianne, but she isn't like most women, no, not really.  At the age of 30, she has the mind of a five year old child.  She is just now learning how to read and write. Laura is also going through the task of toilet training.

Laura was born with something called Down syndrome.  Because of one measly extra chromosome, it left her mentally disabled.

She also has heart problems; she has silvery scars running up and down her chest from multiple surgeries.  One has to be careful not to get her upset or she can get very sick and wind up back in the hospital.

Laura has to wear oxygen at night because she has asthma and her breathing is worse at night.

It isn't easy having a sister like Laura, but I have learned to love her and try to help her as best as I can.  She has taught me patience, tolerance, and most of all, acceptance of those who happen to be "different."

I am Laura's keeper: I look out for her and take care of her.  I don't mind; she has such a sweet, loving personality and is quick to smile or laugh.  She is one of the happiest people I have ever known; not many things seem to ruffle her feathers.

When I'm feeling bad, Laura is always ready with a hug or smile.  I think her goal is to make me laugh and forget my troubles.

It usually works.

Well, Laura is stirring.  I hear her squealing and grunting.  That must mean she is rising to start the day.  I have to get her breakfast and get her morning medications ready.  I will then entertain her until Mom gets off from work.  (Mom works at Jack in the Box and gets off at 2:00 p.m.)

Take care and God bless; I hope you enjoyed reading about my big sister!

There are reasons for everything that happens. You've covered many of them very well in this tale. Well done.
