| I started writing when I was 16 years old out of a need to express myself. I was told by an English Instructor that my writings were less than interesting or impressive and he felt I should give it up. I was crushed, so much so that I cried like a baby. At this point I had been writing for over 5 years and it was the first time I had the courage to share it with the college instructor. But a wise friend reminded me that it was only one person's opinion and encouraged me to keep writing. So I went to the college newspaper and asked for an opportunity to write for them. The first article I wrote gained the attention of a reporter from a major Philadelphia newspaper who came to the college campus to meet me personally. Imagine my surprise. He did just the opposite of what the English teacher had done. He encouraged me to keep writing. I am so glad that I had a friend to help me see beyond the tears and go for what I truly wanted to do and that was to write. Today I have written many articles that have been published, I have written three successful stage plays, two of them musicals. I have won awards and had my some of writings published in year books, and I have 3 published books. I am still writing and I look for opportunities to encourage others to pursue their dreams to write as well. |
