In October 2006 I was pleasantly surprised when I found out I had won a Best Books 2006 Award in the multicultural, non-fiction category. We writers always dream of being read, but we are so used to rejection slips that news of acceptance stuns us.
I must say I felt validated for a short while then doubts swarmed all over. Maybe it was a mistake, may be the editorial board was inexperienced, maybe I got lucky, maybe . . .
Then, in July 2007, I learned that "The Immigrants' Daughter" had placed finalist in the National Indie Excellence 2007 Book Awards. I went numb. It certainly increased my self-confidence and added a few badly needed inches to my height but by then the excitement of winning had worn off. I learned that any subsequent honor will have a diminished impact, unless, of course, it is the Pulitzer prize. That will certainly hit me like a tsunami!
In the meantime, let me work on making small waves.
