  Nickolaus A. Pacione's Success Story
A Publisher Is Born

I have to thank AuthorsDen for bring new life in my writing -- being that I was well established online long before the site was born with a site like Writings From The Grave. Where I brought a darker tone to horror was something I did when I started in 1997 with my site and when I came to AuthorsDen (my site actually predates AuthorsDen.com and VampireFreaks.com) -- I needed something powerful to introduce myself so I used the poem I wrote about 9/11 which was a taboo about that day. As they say one cannot be dark about that day so I came up with posting the dark epic Seasons of Black September.
I never thought that I would even spark a few shockwaves on here with what I write -- then came the short story "Vein Puppetry" which caught the eye of Ron Dondiego and "Observation Of The Raven" which caught the eye of Terry Vinson. I had not yet assembled an anthology of my works but there will be plans of doing so, just want to get the photography together before I will even consider it. I noticed a lot of promising writers in the horror genre, with the encouragement of Diane Hundertmark, in fact this was the first writer I started to become in correspondence with then Mitzi Jackson. I used AuthorsDen as a new platform for my poetry because a lot of the poetry is seen no where else with the exception of "Seasons of Black September," "In A Suicide's Dream," and "Death of a Jester II."
Where one would see the writings on here would be originally on the website I had before I joined AuthorsDen and the journal that I kept for a little close to two years. Then I decided it was time to do an exclusive to here "Darkness From The Skies." This short story would be my return to the Cthulhu Mythos in a large way. Horror is a genre I learned to write when I was 14, and now in my thirties (I joined here just two months shy of turning 26 -- AuthorsDen been the second half of my 20s,) it marks that I have been writing it for almost 13 years. I came a long way from writing slasher stories.
That using Illinois as a springboard for my inspiration and growing up in DuPage County, took cues from Illinois' macabre and paranormal history. My signature in doing supernatural ghost stories is that I use real haunted places as the settings for the fiction. There are many things one can write about from living in Illinois alone, and the horror audience knows their genre. One thing about a horror writer is that they know the audience is varied from the campy kind of horror to the dark, innovative and really cryptic end of it.
Where I am glad a place like this is a around, my only regret is that I wish something like this was around in 1997. I am a long established horror webmaster online; but one thing I knew was going to happen when I joined up with AuthorsDen I was going to get a much older audience with it. I eventually became a published author in print and then a publisher -- which print published career and my publisher career overlap because I will run my own work in anthologies. This trait was carried on from my mentor Bob Gunner of CyberPulp Books Fame and I was published by some of his alumni. I am not going to name them here but they know who they are.
I stopped doing the longer freebies to opt into doing more print exclusive material. My claim to fame in the small press are Tabloid Purposes and The Ethereal Gazette. Many of the people I published went on to become publishers themselves. That's something you can't say everyday.
Though I might be a bane of people wanting to hate me because of my Conservative views -- I've used this mindset to pen an Anti-Abortion Gothic Horror story. What works for me is that I don't write with any kind of erotic content and I ban alternative romance of any kind in Lake Fossil Press. So there are a lot out there saying I am a bigot, well is it a crime to be a white heterosexual? I guess in the 2000s-2010s it's like what Charles Beamount wrote in the 1950s of a world full of homosexuals is the norm and being a heterosexual and a Christian is a crime.
The open secret in the small press is that I am a Christian and six years later I learned that a good handful of the original Tabloid Purposes crew are actually Christian. I see one who calls himself a "Christian" and "Republican" when he pisses on Christian horror writers and Republicans to publish alternative content. He doesn't have a publishing history of his own with his own work but he's citing the "Egoless Hack" -- he dodges the e-piracy especially when my book is involved. The fact he sides with the people who pirate the books. One of them being the publisher behind Black Death Books. She even said "Avoid Nickolaus Pacione" then she goes torching a copy of Tabloid Purposes IV. I survived that.
I've seen magazines drop my story because of people bullying the crap out of them and small presses implode because of the hostility. I've seen people hide the fact they were the owners of a rival imprint for a year when I knew they were the owners. I don't have a domain for Lake Fossil Press and I didn't take a loan out on the company (I got a submission that's a damn good horror story to the e-mail address to Lake Fossil Press, and I've seen naysaying pigs calling Lake Fossil Press a black hole in the small press. Well I give those people the finger because they are adding to the mystique of Lake Fossil Press.) The Den a few years back wanted me to be in charge of their horror anthology, but I was obligated to edit Tabloid Purposes One. So this year I gave them the submission guidelines for DYERS EVE -- this will be their anthology that I promised them, six years overdue. The guidelines are Lake Fossil Press rules, and no this isn't owned by a faceless prick going by AngryInIllinois. I created Lake Fossil Press on Lulu.com and that's the hub for the imprint, I publish a magazine called The Ethereal Gazette and it's been a rotating line up since it's inception. Terry Vinson wrote for the first issue along with Kenneth Goldman and Brian W. Keen from Chimeraworld fame (Goldman was fresh from the second Tabloid Purposes, and John M. Floyd from Quakes and Storms.)
