This night was an extraordinarily gloomy hour of darkness quietly lying heavy over The Cliffs of the Neuse State Park in North Carolina. The weighty low clouds made it almost impossible to see your hand in front of your face. No hard working local stiff should be out on a night as dismal as this one. However, it was an ideal night to move around the thickly wooded area without being easily detected. This was a night that created the perfect opportunity to get close to the park without actually being inside.
There were still four hours remaining before daylight would burst through the clouds and light up the morning. Tracking through the woods was not so easy when carrying a dead body. The limp body was carried like most people would carry a sack of potatoes over their shoulder.
The area had previously been scouted out, and it had been noted that the park was not accessible at night. Fortunately, there were many nearby areas outside the recreational area that were easily accessible to the cliffs overlooking the water. Finding the previously sought out acceptable location, the murderer stopped at the edge of the cliff. The density of the trees and bushes gave excellent cover. Looking quickly around and realizing no one was in the area, the killer, with one giant push, heaved the body down the cliff. The killer stood motionless, intently watching the dead body roll down the hill, finally splashing into the dark murky water below.
Another contract completed without a hitch. There’s no better feeling than knowing that you are at the top of your profession, but knowing that you can only stay at the top of this game for a short period of time. It’s important that you take advantage of your skills and youth as often as possible for both financial and personal reasons. No way will anybody working in this line of work ever be eligible to collect social security benefits.
Without hesitation, the killer hurriedly turned and headed out of the wooded surroundings. As the killer approached the road, headlights flashed around the curve temporarily blinding the murderer. On pure instincts, the assassin hit the dirt hoping not to be spotted. As luck would have it, the car passed within ten feet without the driver noticing anything. A close call, but any person at the top of this game, and worth his salt, will be prepared for all situations.
Now it was time to kick this burg to the curb and get on back to some kind of action-filled civilization. The need is for a kicking city, not a sitting city.
Rico’s mind was working overtime as he began his drive back to the station. So far, this case was growing more difficult by the minute. It was fast becoming a really complicated situation with no encouraging solutions on the horizon. Prudent judgment cautioned him not to mention the dead body in the morgue to the Senator yet. There was just not enough information so far, but Rico knew he had to get the body identified sooner. No question all hell would break loose if the dead girl turned out to be Ashley Jordan. Solving this case was going to be difficult enough without the Senator jumping into the middle of it with both feet. Time was not on his side and he knew it. Rico had come up against a number of touch cases over his career, but this one would challenge his police experience to the ultimate limit.
