Excerpt
When you make a leadership decision, you don't know if it is "right" or "wrong." Only time will tell. Leadership decisions are judged when results are in and others judge the decision in the clear light of day. Arrogant leaders are reticent to seek the wisdom of others, quick to blame when things go wrong, and unwilling or unable to learn from their own experience.
Because arrogant leaders always want to appear right, they do not have the courage to tell the truth or wisdom to keep their promises. For fear of being accused of making a "bad" decision, they cover their tracks with deceit or blame. Arrogant leaders avoid being exposed by conveniently forgetting what they promised others, and leaving their colleagues and team members hanging in the wind.
Effective leadership is a matter of increasing your leadership wisdom. Leadership decisions cannot be boxed into "right" or "wrong," but form a continuum from "wise" to "foolish." Wise decisions are better decisions. All of the important decisions you make will be based on uncertainties and partial information as well as conflicting needs and priorities. It "PenZon this and PenZon that."
You can develop competence and overcome your arrogance as you learn how to use the PenZon Principle. When you increase your wisdom, you will make better decisions. You increase your effectiveness as you develop the ability to make "smart guesses," a phrase used by Daniel Goleman in the book Primal Leadership.
In a PenZon situation, a "smart guess" is often the best decision you can make. These decisions may look like a leap of faith to others, but it is the ability to go beyond the facts, or lack of facts. It is more than a guess; it is the combination of experience, thoughtful reflection, and intuition. It is practical wisdom. Leaders have the capacity to grow in practical wisdom.
