From Salford To Tucson and Back Again

As a supporter of Manchester United, Robert Carter has seen it all. He has witnessed the highs, the lows, the false dawns; and more recently, the unprecedented success of his beloved team. He has watched the DVDís, read the autobiographies and studied the history, but something was missing. What if a passionate supporter shared his or her experiences of following the club through thick and thin? Now that was a book that Carter wanted to read but couldnít find. The only solution was to write it himself.

‘From Salford to Tucson and Back Again’ is the result of almost fifty years of supporting the Red Devils. It takes us from a bygone age of terracing and camaraderie to the faceless experience of the modern football stadium. Born in Davyhulme near Manchester, Carter spent his early years in Swinton, near Salford. He has lived and travelled all over the world, before settling back into his native Manchester in January 2008. Wherever his travels took him, Manchester United was always close to his heart. Read about a close encounter with the police in Bangkok. On a famous day in May 1999, while United were winning the treble, this devotion almost cost him his life.

“If you're a sports fan, you should read this book. If you are a football fan, you really should read this book. If you are a Manchester United fan, you absolutely MUST read this book. It will take you back to your fondest memories of the world’s greatest game played by the world's greatest team, and remind you why you fell in love with the Reds.”
- Nick Towle, Chair, Independent Manchester United Supporters Trust (MUST)
Carter's storytelling is vivid and will take you back to your fondest football memories. It took me back to mine. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will read it over and over again. - Jim Rayburn, Manchester United fan.
For fan or foe, the Manchester United story is one of highs and lows, of excitement, adventure and legends. ‘From Salford to Tucson and Back Again’ is told through the eyes of an ordinary supporter. It is not the autobiography of a player yet to reach his prime, or one that will never be anywhere near as good as his ego lets him believe. It is not written by a journalist, or anybody with an insider view. All the stories are true, some joyous and some painful. Like every other United fan that Carter knows, he lives and breathes football. He cries when they win and he cries even louder when they lose.
Excerpt
As we get older, the most important thing we have is our memories. This is a book about my memories, particularly those around Manchester United Football Club. If you are a United fan, you will no doubt relate to many of the stories, and you will enjoy reading about them from the personal viewpoint of a fellow supporter. As a United fan you will enjoy re-living the emotional rollercoaster that our beloved football club puts us through. If for some strange reason you donít follow football, this will give you an insight into the psyche of the football supporter. If you support somebody other than United, why?
There are many reasons why we support a football team and we often canít put those reasons into words. Sometimes as a youngster we have a favorite player and support the team they play for. Sometimes it happens in the school playground where we like the colour of a shirt (although this reason totally baffles me). Other times it is because we, as Brits, like to support the underdog.
For me though it is easy. I was born in Davyhulme, grew up in Swinton, now part of Salford, and went to a school where 90% of the boys were United fans. I know this will dispel the popular myth that people in Manchester donít support United but who cares. As Mancunians we know the truth.
Whatever the reason that you support your team; there is no doubt that the history of Manchester United is one without rival. We have suffered more tragedy than any other club and thankfully, we have had more triumph than most. Our history is one of the main reasons why we are supported by millions throughout the world. The other reason, no matter what the circumstance, Manchester United will always play the game the right way. From Busbyís magnificent Babes through to the current team, United have been unrivalled in their passion for open, attractive and entertaining football.
For fan or foe, the Manchester United story is one of highs and lows, of excitement, adventure and legends. This version of the story is one through the eyes of an ordinary fan like you. It is not the autobiography of a player yet to reach his prime, or one that will never be anywhere near as good as his ego lets him believe. It is not written by a journalist, or anybody with an insider view. All the stories are true, some joyous and some painful. Like every other United fan that I know, I live and breathe football. I cry when we win and I cry even louder when we lose.
So here is my story as I follow our glorious football team that is Manchester United, Enjoy!
