You read about in the newspaper almost every day. The television news cast s report on it's activities. There have been documentries and specials made on the subject. many lives have been destroyed by it. it is not a respecter of people, has no boundrie lines, no prejuduice, it strikes down men, women and children alike. It has been going on since the beginning of time.
TERRORISM! A word that strikes fear in the hearts of the bravest of men. A cancer on civilized society every where and it appears to be growing at a rapid rate. When I decided to write this book I did extensive research on the subject matter. Even after exhaustive research I began to realize that after a while I was trying to find a reason for the existance of terrorism and why any civilized person would commit such atrocities.
What I did find filled me with louthing and horror. It sickened me. My research dated back to 1900, of time of the boxer rebellion until 1997, when I finished the book. Since that time there have been hundreds of terrorist attacks all over the world. This doesn't include those incidents where the causes were chalked up to 'unknown'.
I originally thought that this type of thing could never happen here in America, that it was regulated to under developed third world nations. Then the Oklahoma City and Atlanta Olympics Games bombings occured and my perspective drastically changed. My research reveals that these two incidents were by far not the first ones on American soil.
It struck me that no one is safe, no one immune from the specter of terrorism. I thought at first, before my research, that the terrorist was comprised of fanatical, crazed lunitics. I was wrong, for the majority of terrorists look just like you and me. While they might not be of our decent of ethic make up, for the most part they are like us in many ways.
They are intelligent, cunning people. They have families and moral and religious up bringings. Some could pass as our neighbors. Lokk at Timothy McVeigh. Because of these facts, they are all the more dangerous. Terrorism is not racial, at least to the extent of comprising of one nationality or even one religion.
Our law enforcement and military are unable to control terrorism because their hands are tied. They have to work within the frame work of the laws handed down to them from the powers that be. They are also grossly understaffed and underfunded for the task of combating terrorism. Though they make a valiant effort, still they can not bring this cancer to an end.
After all my research and after all the time finally writing and looking to get it published, finially, S*T*A*R, Surveillance of Terrorist Actions and Retaliation was born. Although this book is a work of fiction and all the characters and events are fictional, I did encorporate a few documented incidents of terrorist activitiy. I do feel that it reflects not only my thought, but, many more of the people I interviewed while writing the book where terrorism intruded in upon their lives.
I sincerely hope that you will by the book. One because I am a starving writer and I need the money. But, the main reason is because I hope you will enjoy the read and maybe it will make the reader think about what's going on in this hostile world. To many of us, I believe, tend to hide ourselves from the outside world. As long as it doesn't intrude on our lives. That's how I thought, but, the truth hit me right between the eyes. I found that there is ugliness and despair out there, even in our own country.
A month after their first assignment came to an end. Richard Benjamin Steele stood alone on top of the mountain on the island and gazed down at the stone marker with the Star of David craved into it. Here, a friend was buried. When Sam had fallen to the courtyard ground in Carthea, Steele had rushed over to him. As he held Ben-David in his arms, he saw the blood seeping through the Israeli’s robes. He had been hit in the crossfire in the battle with Bathea’s men, yet, the warrior had said nothing and kept on fighting until the battle was won.
Only when he was sure the day ended in victory, did Sam’s spirit find release. On the way back to the island, on the ‘Triton’, Kane had done all he could, but, as they neared the Star Island, Samuel Ezikiel Ben-David was gone. He was buried on top of this mountain, with all his team members in attendance. Taylor had even been flown over and attended the funeral.
Now, as he stood before his friend’s grave, Steele looked up into the night sky and at that instant, saw the brightest star he had ever seen before, appear in the heavens, as if by magic. As he watched, this celestial beacon seemed to move and hover directly over Sam’s grave stone. Steele knew that as he and the rest of the team went through their various missions, his friend would be with them always, in spirit. He would be a permanent part of the Star Team.
