F W WOOLWORTHS WITH COUNTERS
Yes it is gone
an odd icon
that had seen better days
from its later
car boot sale maze,
once a very proper shop
with brown counters
almost like islands
that sold the lot,
elastic bands
to knitting needles
children's toys
and 78rmp records
on the Embassy label
all cover versions
in the hit parade.
Mum used to buy
her knickers elastic
from F W Woolworths,
I used to cut off some
to make catapults
she thought she was
putting on weight
so she bought extra
that was great.
Wooden pegs
that built like Leggo
aeroplanes and houses
sometimes people.
Broken biscuits
scoop some sweets
drawing books
and colouring pencils
all placed
in paper bags
from over a counter
into your hand.
WHEN COWS DROPPED COW PATS
There's a whole lot of noise
there out of town
building where Cow Pats were once laid down.
Pile drivers been hammering
sometimes
late at night
under bright
ugly whopping big arch lights.
Gone the sod between the hoof
concrete and tarmac
is there instead,
waiting for cars
and trolley parks
for shoppers to come
for their food and wares,
collecting their points
on their cards
in the great out of town
SuperDuperMart.
Not the same now the Cows are gone
there was something
refreshing about
a Cow Pat pong,
almost historic
National Trusty I'd say
now its all changed
gone those days,
Mr. SuperDuper has moved in to stay
sadly the village
will never be the same,
Bob's Bakers that has gone
the two fruit and veg
will be going soon,
even the pub
has lost it's market
amazing how Cows and Cow Pats
kept everything alright
made life seem
as if it was fine.
Almost as if on holy ground
the Cow and the Cow pat
right of way
was laid down,
now pile drivers
lay down concrete
not even the smell
does it eke
a shame and a sham
on the edge of town.
