An excerpt from "Charis' Healing," one of the stories published in the anthology..
“The Healer said I’d earned my staff,” I said, nodding my head at the long, burled staff made from the heart of a red oak tree. The heart, Healer told me once, was the best part of the wood for Healer’s staves. “But he said I could not take my place among our people yet.”
“Why not?” Dev took a hunk of cheese, bit off a healthy portion, and chewed while he waited for me to answer.
I sipped my ale. “I can heal bodies, Dev, as you know.” His hand, callused and powerful, moved quickly to the scar I’d noted earlier. “But Healer said I had yet to learn the art of healing a person."
Even though we were alone, the three of us, I instinctively hushed my voice. It was hard for me to even mention, but… “Healer Achan is dying, Dev. He knows it. He cannot wait for a heartsick person to manifest themselves for my benefit.” My tone had been sharp and I tried to fix that. “He said to go out, you see. To go out and seek someone who needs to be made whole again. That’s why we’re here.”
