I was wondering and worrying about where to begin my doctor's recommendation that I find some way to reduce years of accumulated stress that was affecting my health and my marriage. Fortunately my husband told me that his mother was feeling and looking much better these days due to "When You Need a Timeout" which she had received as a gift. He brought the book home and offered to go through it with me. We started the process by doing the self assessment survey followed by a wide variety of stress relieving techniques based on each of our individual stress profiles. We learned a lot from the book's examples of 6 women who each learned to managed a major life crises, much as he had seen in his mother's case. Reading the book together was quick and easy, however doing the exercises took time and energy and it worked like any other good investment--we got back more than we put into it. One exciting result has been the recommended 24 hour stress-free getaway which each of us has been doing three times a year for the past 2 years. Between getaways we tell each other our fondest dreams of what we would love to be doing as a natural and spiritual calling for personal fulfillment if we were unshackled by mundane circumstances, then we each plan and execute an overnight get-away to nurture that dream and ourselves. It's a highly personalized timeout that we have enjoyed planning and the result has been an addictive relaxed feeling of aaaaahhhhhhh! On a daily basis we do some of the exercises in the book together and we do some of them individually whenever we feel a need to unload excess tension recently acquired. I can see how a couple that de-stresses together is more likely to stay together and enjoy their lives together and apart.
