The Bully

Jason is being picked on by a bully in school. When his mother finds out, she says she will go to the school and make the bullying stop.

The story is followed by a question and answer segment for both children and parents to help them learn how to deal with bully issues in a positive manner

The Bully is in colouring book format. While children may have a limited vocabulary to express their emotions, they can express themselves very well with colour. The child is urged to colour the illustrations while the subject of bullying is discussed. The book includes a word search and other activities related to bullying. Excerpt
Jason peeked out from behind the bushes. He couldn't see the bully, but Jason was sure the bully was there. Maybe he was behind the fence, or around the corner of the school. He was somewhere. He always was.

Jason held his lunch bag tightly in his arms and stepped out from behind the bush. One step, two steps, three steps. If he was lucky, he might make it into the school before the bully found him. A few more steps...he was almost there.

The door to the school opened and out stepped the bully.

"Hey, Jason. Did you bring me a lunch today?" the bully asked.

A Wonderful Book!
The Bully

Author: Rita Toews

Reviewed by Dr Bob Rich

". . . Many people dismiss bullying as just ‘high spirits’, ‘toughening up’, ‘part of life’. It isn’t. It is a junior version of criminal activity, and it causes immense harm. What’s more, it causes as much harm to the bully as to the victim. Many habitual residents of jails cut their teeth in the school ground, and if they’d been stopped then, they might have grown into law-abiding members of society. So, we all suffer from bullying.

This wonderful little book by Rita Toews addresses the problem in a way that will appeal to elementary school students. It offers advice I know to be valid and effective. It gives detailed, specific steps to take, reinforced by drawings that will raise a smile, and a quiz for both kids and their parents.

Highly Recommended

The Bully

by Rita Y. Toews

THE BULLY is a helpful book, full of valuable information, for parents, teachers, and children. Skillfully crafted by talented author, Rita Y. Toews, it targets bullying situations in elementary school. The book touches on a serious issue that is a universal problem. The outstanding illustrations by Jon Ljungberg, help exemplify the stark reality of bullying.

There’s a question and answer quiz for parents and teachers, and a list of resourceful links that are sure to help in a search for solutions.

Watch for future books by Rita Y. Toews, that will target bullying in senior school, deal with cyber stalking, and other child safety issues. With her great understanding of the human spirit, compassion, and love for children, the books are sure to be a hit.

THE BULLY can be used as a learning tool and should be required reading in schools. The book is extremely educational, and highly recommended by this reviewer.
