In present-day global markets, successful communication of why, what, when, where, who, how and benefits of personal contribution to a niche identifies you as different, a recognized brand.
Why – As an avid reader, not writer, it was through publication that I recognized the power of written words.
What – Although I predominately read fiction, I write nonfiction. Nonfiction, regardless of media competition, remains the “bread and butter” of the industry. Usually, it sells twice as many copies; and in most cases, does not require an agent.
When/Where – On the other hand, don’t quit your day job! Dedicate specific writing space and teach yourself to effectively use allotted time slots because to be successful, you need to weekly spend at least 3 days marketing yourself and 2 days writing.
Who - You don’t simply sell your work; you sell yourself - market, market, market! Seek repeat assignments, network and gain credentials through education and experience.
How (writing is a business) - Understand the mechanics of operating a freelance business. Identify expected pay through using compensation reported by Writer’s Market and practice professional business etiquette.
How (writing tips) - Solicit writer and style guidelines and then, create appropriate queries, proposals and article and/or column formats.
Benefits - Publication is a form of communication that provides the opportunity to become known as an expert, acquire personal satisfaction and monetary benefit; but more importantly, share collective knowledge - influence others through the power of words.
