The wood handle of the knife brought the reality of the situation to her and she stared at it. Its sharp combat-like appeal comforted her when she turned back toward the couch. She knew she’d have no qualms defending herself if she had to. Seated, she rubbed the spot in between her eyes where a sharp pain thumped. Her head felt woozy and heavy.
A hard knock came from the front door.
“Jackson, is that you?” Her voice, made weak with fear, was barely audible.
The knob turned from the outside. “Jackson, is that you?” she yelled out, frantically. A heavy pound, like someone with his fist curled in fury hit the door. “Who are you? What do you want?” Simone held the knife tight in her hand.
“Help me!” the voice on the other side groaned.
“No! I can’t help you! Go away! Go somewhere else!” Simone cried. “Leave me alone! Do you hear me? Leave me alone!” She turned and the tortured features of the man again peered hopelessly in the window. Contorted with grief and agony, he screamed hysterically at Simone.
“Give it back!” His voice garbled, as if filled with dirt.
“Go Away!” she screamed.
The door handle turned violently. Whoever wanted in the cottage knocked and pounded with a savage fury, brutal in its tenacity. Her hands over her ears, she stood and begged,
“Stop it! Stop it!” Her head swung around and the face vanished. The moaning, however, got louder. Voices, hundreds of them, cried out. The wind carried the tormented whimpers around the cottage and she feared for her sanity. She dropped the knife and got on her knees and sobbed uncontrollably. She let out one last cry, “Jackson!” before she fainted away.
Night Owl Romance Reviews
This is such a wonderful book that for the first time in a long time as I was reading it I was in tears. The characters of Simone and Jackson connected with me in such a way that I felt like I was watching a classic movie instead of reading a book.
My heart broke for Simone along her journey and I cried out happily with her too. Ms. Hones pulled me into the world of Simone and Jackson and I was lost to it. I highly recommend this book and advise you keep a box of Kleenex nearby.
Ms. Hones, thank you for letting me get lost with Jackson and Simone and I willingly go with you on your next adventure.
Fallen Angels Reviews
Simone O'Henley takes her boss up on her offer to stay at their remote lakefront cottage while she nurses her broken heart. But although the location is beautiful and the local people are friendly, there is just something off about the grove of trees behind the cottage, and Simone is sure she has heard people moaning back there. Meeting gorgeous and gentle Jackson Taylor sure has a way of taking her mind off the grove, and Jackson assures her there is no one back there. But when Simone discovers none of the local people know Jackson, she begins to suspect that they are right in thinking he is nothing but a lying no good land developer planning to steal their land and build condos. So when Jackson disappears Simone decides to find him and learn the truth for herself. What Simone finds will change her life and almost everything she has ever believed in.
What a creative and entertaining twist to a good verses evil battle and for doing what is right even in the face of opposition! There is something off about that grove of trees behind the peaceful cottage Simone is staying in, and the answer behind what is going on will change everything for her. Simone needs to learn to trust her instincts more. She is very naïve and innocent and falls easily for the gentle, kind Jackson, but there are things that he isn't telling her that affect her life and future. The romance between Simone and Jackson is sweet and so romantic, but the secrets being kept may destroy everything. Something bad happened in that grove of trees, and now Simone may be in real danger despite Jackson's assurance that he can protect her. And no one can stop greed from overrunning the small peaceful community, the question is, is Jackson behind the development company or not? If you love suspense, romance, and surprising plot twist, you will enjoy Those Who Wait. I will definitely be watching for more good books by author, Lynn Hones. She is a good story teller and defiantly a little twisted which makes for an excellent author in my opinion!
