A Desert Rest
Mark 6: 31And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat. 32And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
Jesus called us to a great work, to go out into all the world and spread the Gospel of the Kingdom. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but the world consists of approximately 6.5 billion people now. That’s a lot of people to tell!
There are believed to be approximately 2 billion Christians in the world today. Wow! You say. No not wow. You see these are merely those who claim to know of Jesus Christ and therefore call themselves Christian. It is widely believed that there are really only about 500 million true believers and followers of Jesus; not just those who proclaim to know Him. A quarter of those who profess Christ are believed to be true followers and converts. If push came to shove and great persecutions came onto some of them, I have no doubt that the number would fall drastically.
Even now I know that not all 645 million believers are doing the work Christ had left for us to do. Imagine 6.5 billion people in the world and 500 million workers in the field. With 11 percent of the world believed to be true Born again Christians the work would be quite light. Every one believer would only need to witness to and look after 10 nonbelievers. Imagine how much easier the work would be if it was truly spread out amongst us all.
Jesus knew that those who would take His commission to heart would be far less then those who followed after Him. He knew that the great work would be spread out amongst far too few believers causing many to “burn out.”
You see we get so caught up in doing the work of God and giving all of ourselves unto the work that we forget about the most important part of our walk with Jesus, our relationship with Him. We do and do and do and yet we do not spend time with Him.
Luke 10: 38Now it came to pass, as they went, that He entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word. 40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
You see Martha was a believer and one who took the care of the ministry to heart. She worked hard to serve her master and I’m very sure she did it well. See the thing is she was so encumbered about serving and doing for her master that she forgot the one thing the master wanted most; Her. Jesus wanted more then anything else to sit with her and spend time with her, to impart the wisdom and grace of God to her as He was doing with her sister, Mary.
How many of us today are like Martha? Reminds me of an old song by the country band “Alabama”, the verse goes “… I rush and rush until life’s no fun. All I really gotta do is live and die but I’m in a hurry and don’t know why.”
We rush and rush and serve and serve and forget our first love as the church of Ephesus did in Revelation 2: 1Unto the angel of the church of Ephesus write; These things saith he that holdeth the seven stars in his right hand, who walketh in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks; 2I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: 3And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name’s sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. 4Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. 5Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.
The only way to serve Christ with the enthusiasm that burns inside you is to sit at His feet and learn of Him. Let Him impart to you that which you need to know in order to carry out the great commission. Even one hour spent in the presence of Jesus can give you all the strength and wisdom and knowledge needed to do all He has for you. He has prepared your day for you. How much more effective would you be if you were well rested and infused with His presence and His Word and knew what the day held for you?
Rest in Him and sit at His feet. Isaiah 30:7 For the Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength [is] to sit still. Isaiah 30:15 for thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength: and ye would not.
