Bern's Fairy Tales

Church Bells.

It sounded as if all of the Church Bells were ringing. The chimes were coming from everywhere. Today being Monday there should have been no bells ringing at all. I wondered what was the occasion for the bells to ring so loud and so many all at the same time. The last time I heard so many bells ringing was when Peace was declared in Europe at the end of the thirty-nine, forty-five war. I switched my radio on and turned the dial hoping to pick up a sender that would give me news as to why the Church bells were ringing as usual there was all kinds of music being played, many melodies that I myself have sometimes sung or whistled. Talks on all kinds of subjects from learned people, programs about the animal world but nothing as to why the bells were ringing.

I could stand the noise no longer and placed two wads of cotton wool in my ears. The cotton wool deadened the bell’s noise but it did not stop the bells from ringing. I decided to go for a walk in the woods on Dartford Heath, Perhaps the fairies could tell me why the Church Bells were ringing so loud. Under the trees it was cool and normally I would have enjoyed my stroll through Fairyland. It was not long when a hand tapped me on my shoulder. “What is the matter have you gone deaf?” It was Her Majesty Queen Feeanna. Taking the cotton wool from my ears, I told her about the Church Bells that I could hear ringing. Her Majesty looked at me and said much to my surprise, “There are no Church Bells ringing all is as it always is here in Fairyland.” I shook my head but the ringing bells were still to be heard as loud as they were when I first heard them in my home.

Her Majesty looked at me and asked if she could look into my ears. Lowering my head so that Her Majesty did not have to stand on tiptoe, I listened to what she had to say. “Have there been any strangers at your house or in your garden? I replied, “No your Majesty there have been no visitors for a week or more.” Her Majesty bent down and plucked a stem from a bunch of thick grass. “Keep your head still,” she told me; then there was a silence, it was as if I had gone deaf. Her Majesty showed me two extremely small boxes she had taken a box from each ear. Some one has implanted these small radios in your ears. Before doing so the loud speakers had been turned on to full strength. Some one had gone to much trouble to record the church bells onto a never-ending tape. This was the Church Bells ringing that I had heard.

“Now said Her Majesty let us see who has played this stupid trick on you it could have turned you deaf.” The two extremely small radios she placed onto her magic mirror. A series of pictures passed over the mirror’s face, the two radios had been made by a young man that wanted to prove that he could reduce the size of most electrical things if he wanted to. It was his boasting that the wizard Moanalot had overheard and it was Moanalot that got the young man to build these small radios. Moanalot had also taken the recordings of the Church Bells ringing. Moanalot trained a housefly to carry the radios and to drop one in each of my ears while I was asleep. Moanalot knew when I woke that it was time to switch the radios on. It was these radios that were responsible for my hearing the Church Bells ringing so loud.

Her Majesty smiled a little smile and said “ Moanalot likes houseflies, he shall have his houseflies. With a wave of her magic wand thousands and thousands of houseflies appeared from the tip of her wand. The flies flew off in the direction of Moanalot’s house. There were flies everywhere, thousand of small houseflies. The walls of his house were thick with flies the wizard wondering why it was so dark outside opened the front door. This was his biggest mistake the flies entered his house hundreds of thousands of houseflies covered all in his house. Moanalot could not eat for all food was immediately covered in flies. His bed was full of flies creeping and crawling over his pillows, his sheets not a clear space was to be seen and what is worse the flies stopped with him for over a week. I think that this was a fitting punishment for Moanalot; after all why did he pick on me with his radios? Was it because I write all about the wizard and witches in my fairy tales. No I do not feel sorry for him he should not have used the two houseflies to drop the radios into my ears.
