Excerpt
“Now, stand up,” Merry told him and reached to take his hand. He was cold as ice and he didn’t have a clue… yet. “In here.” She began to walk backwards toward the bathroom, drawing him along in front of her. Simon allowed her to pull him along a few steps and then leaned to see where they were going.
He stopped.
“Why are we going in there?” he asked in a very low voice and glanced back at the door.
“That’s where we’re going to perform the ritual cleansing,” she told him lightly.
“Oh.”
He allowed her to open the door, but when he saw the candles and smelled the perfumed water and the frankincense. He stopped again.
“Are you sure this will be all right?”
He looked back at the door again.
“Don’t worry, Brother,” she told him. “No one is going to disturb us. Mark Andrew and Lucio did just fine. There’s nothing to it.”
He stepped inside the bathroom and looked down at the water in the tub, frowning.
“Are you going to pour water on me?” he asked suspiciously as she closed the door.
“Yes.” She went to light another lump of frankincense and put it in the censer. “And don’t worry. That water is especially for you. It’s not… used.”
“Oh,” Simon nodded and then objected, “But my uniform will be ruined. That won’t be good for the ceremony, will it?”
“No it won’t be ruined,” she said and turned to face him forcing her soft features into a sterner look. “You won’t be wearing it.”
“I won’t?” He stood blinking at her. “How so?”
“You’re going to take it off,” she ordered. “Now.”
“No, I’m not,” he shook his head slowly.
“Yes, you are,” she said. “You have to. It’s part of the ritual. I am the Master Magician. You are sworn to obey me.”
“No, it can’t be,” he said adamantly and backed up and bumped the steps leading to the tub. “I am sworn to obey,” he added in a lower voice.
“Yes, you are,” she told him a bit more seriously.
“I can’t do this! I am sworn to obey,” he repeated and looked about in panic before making a dash for the door. He flung it open and tried to make it to the bedroom. Merry grabbed his mantel and yanked back on it. His feet left the floor and he fell flat on his back on the rug.
“Oh, God, Simon!” Merry gasped and knelt beside him. He was supposed to obey her. Somehow, he was overriding her magick. “I didn’t mean to do that.”
