As the French Revolution rages, the English nobility offer sanctuary to many a refugee~

Into the Lion's Heart kicks off the new historical line debuting at the Wild Rose Press called Love letters.  The premise of this series is that a letter brings the hero and heroine together.~

Blurb: As the French Revolution rages, the English nobility offer sanctuary to many a refugee. Captain Dalton Evans arrives in Dover to meet a distant cousin, expecting to see a spoiled aristocrat. Instead, he's conquered by the simplicity of his new charge. And his best friend Thomas Archer isn't immune to her artless charm, either.

Cecile Beaumont didn't choose to travel across the Channel. And she certainly didn't expect that impersonating her own mistress would introduce her to a most mesmerizing man. Now she must play out the masquerade, or risk life, freedom – and her heart.

Choking on the brine, she thrashed to right herself. Dalton spat saltwater from his mouth and fought to regain his seat while pulling her up with him. Not his most dignified effort. She was the devil to get hold of—kept slipping away. He grabbed her again, only to be knocked back down and rolled with her in the swill on the bottom of the boat.

Damn and blast! Tom and another man hoisted them upright in the prow.
“Thanks,” Dalton grunted, biting his tongue in the presence of a lady. “All right?” he shouted at her, and shifted her securely onto the seat beside him.

“Oui!” she sputtered when she’d recovered her breath.

She shook all over—must be chilled to the bone. They’d be fortunate if she didn’t catch her death, probably bruised too from tossing about in the skiff. The sooner she was safely housed indoors by a toasty hearth, the better.

Keeping an arm around the sodden woman, he peered into a striking pair of charcoal-gray eyes set above a pert nose and framed by fine dark brows.

She parted trembling, bluish lips. “Merci Monsieur—Que Dieu vous bénisse—Les saints nous bénis en préservent,” she stammered, thanking, blessing him, and calling on the saints.

Dalton was tempted to call on them himself, but her outpouring took him by surprise.

Not content with acknowledging his aid, she turned to Tom, crouched on her other side, and blurted similar gratitude—nearly incoherent in the tumult raging around them. Tom gave a nod through gritted teeth then bent his head over the boat and heaved the contents of his volatile stomach.

She tilted her head at Dalton, eyes crinkled in sympathy. “Mal de mer,” she said, using the French for seasick.

Into The Lions Heart by Beth Trissel is a historical romance novelette that is sure to delight the fancy of those who read this genre. The story revolves around three main characters: Captain Dalton Evans; his best friend, Thomas Archer; and Dalton's distant cousin, Sophia Devereux (aka Cecile), who is supposedly fleeing France in the middle of upheavals. Arriving in Dover to pick up his charge, with the sea’s rolling, the boat is spotted and he manages to get to her before she is thrown overboard. Rescuing the damsel in distress proves to be a chore in itself. As their feet once again hit dry land, there is something suspicious and right away Dalton and Tom both pick up on it. This could not be Sophia; it had to be an imposter, but that does not keep the hearts of both men from fluttering after they gaze upon her. Cecile Beaumont never intended to impersonate her mistress, but Sophia had other plans. Now can she carry on this masquerade, or will they discover the truth and send her back?

This is not the first of Beth Trissel's books that I have read, so I knew that it would be a great read. The author is very knowledgeable of historical eras, and this shows up in her books. The three main characters have an attitude about them that makes you like them instantly. I absolutely adored Dalton's aunt as she takes Cecile under her wing, thinking her to be Sophia. This is a book that can be read in an hour’s time and would make a great lunch hour read. One thing for certain, once you pick it up, it will be hard to put down as one has to find out if Cecile succeeds in her ploy reaching a surprising conclusion. If you have never read any of Beth Trissel’s books, this will be a great start and make you want to read more. I have always liked her style of writing and hope she does not change.

Top Pick from The Romance Reviews

I simply adored INTO THE LION'S HEART by Beth Trissel. I'm not an avid reader of historical romances or even the simply sweet romances, but this tale kissed a delicate smile on my face and I have to admit, my heart melted. Not only was the writing superb and in context with the time and place, but the plot itself was very well done.

Poor Cecile Beaumont has been put in a very awkward situation--her mistress, Sophia Devereux, has requested Cecile pretend to be the vicomte's daughter and marry an English gentleman in her stead! Cecile does as she is told, but the deceit tries at her soul. And she especially has trouble deceiving Captain Dalton Evans, her intended fiancé. She has fallen madly in love with him and she is horrified that the Captain might send her back to war-torn France.

Captain Dalton Evans didn't expect to fall in love with a Frenchwoman, let alone a woman who wasn't a noble, and that has left him in a precarious situation. How long can he keep up Cecile's ruse? How long can he keep up his own ruse that he hasn't fallen for Cecile? And will this have a happily ever after? Or will convention dictate his actions?

For such a short story, this tale was jam-packed with thick emotion, plot, and stirring heroism. Even the ancillary characters were detailed and were more than just a cardboard cut-outs or filler. I sincerely enjoyed INTO THE LION'S HEART even though it was not my usual genre. I applaud Ms. Trissel for this finely woven tale and I will read more of her work in the future!
