Excerpt
Billy sat on his knees at the window sill with his chin resting on the back of his hand as he peered into the night. He could feel a nail digging into his left elbow, as he shifted his arm to ease the pain. A sound from across the street caused him to jerk for just a moment. His eyes squinted as he looked toward the direction of the sound. He could see the small elm tree at the corner of Ms. Hawkins’ porch. Fog moved across like a thick cloud of smoke, as he lost view of the elm for a moment. Then the elm appeared again. ‘Could this be Tom returning?’ Billy thought to himself. Billy looked down at the window sill as he felt the nail dig into his elbow again. He looked up as the sound of crunching leaves came from across the street. Billy took his elbow off of the nail on the window sill as he rose up to get a better view from the direction of the sound.
Tom was at the corner of Ms. Hawkins’ house. He looked down as he crunched some leaves under foot. He stopped for a moment to look around. ‘Is anyone looking at me?’ Tom thought as he eased his right foot off a small pile of leaves. Tom looked to his right and then to his left. As he turned to the left, a shadow of an image ran from a group of houses across the street.
