The Autism Handbook, to be released October 15, 2009 offers background information on autism written in an easy to read an understand format. It also details information on six autistic children I taught in Special Education classes - the goal being for parents to realize their child is not the only one who throws a tantrum in a restaurant, runs for no apparent reason, or consumes food at an alarming rate. It also gives information on how my staff worked with each of these behaviors, offering tips to parents and other care-providers.

The Autism Handbook

Excerpt

"What is autism? If you ask this question to one hundred people you will likely receive one hundred different answers. Most professionals and parents of an autistic child agree that it is a complex developmental disability...all agree that autism strikes a young, defenseless innocent child."

Professional Reviews

Dr. Barbara Kammerlohr, Ph.D Special Education
Jack E. George knows about autism! This former teacher spent 15 years with autistic children and their families. He was a classroom teacher, family consultant, tutor, group home worker and volunteer.

Written for parents and others who daily teach and care for this unique population, "The Autism Handbook" is extremely easy to read. George shares what he learned in his training, his work and in the schools. With unflagging honesty, he recounts his own struggles to make a different in the lives of his students and their families. He summarizes his findings of those who search for the causes and cure for this puzzling condition, concluding that there is still much to learn about how to approach this growing epidemic.

Using case studies of specific students, Jack describes typical behaviors and characteristics of children he has known. These mini-biographies not only point out common issues that come up for families and friends of autistic children, they describe techniques trained professionals use to deal successfully with behavior and communication issues. The stories of these courageous students are full of examples of ways to communicate and diminish unacceptable behavior.

"The Autism Handbook" is a practical guide for the lay person trying to understand autism. Parents, para-educators, prospective special education teachers and others new to the field will find this handbook to be a fascinating introduction to the world of the autistic child.

Jacqueline Andersen, CCC, M.A.

One can only gain and grow from reading this inspiring book. His words allow the reader to begin to understand the global aspect of the challenging condition. This is a must read book.

Edson Ruiz Zavaleta, M.A.M. Profesor del Centro de Estudios Superiores del Noroeste, Universidad Iberoamericana del Noroeste, Universidad Autonoma de Baja California
The handbook of autism: Information and Case Studies from the perspective of a teacher is an invaluable resource for parents, as it helps to recognize the early signs of a child with autism, the book aims to understand the different mechanisms and therefore legal and practical to give the best treatment for an autistic child. Jack E. George who has worked in direct contact with autistic children, shows through a series of cases a practical guide to extend the vision for teachers, psychologists, pediatricians, and all those professionals interested in autism. Precisely through those cases, with an enjoyable reading, the book illustrates various solutions to behavioral problems such as aggression, communication, eating disorders, and interaction among others. It is a book you should not miss.
