BRIDGING THE GAPS is is the book written by Nazish Zafar which contains worldwide critiques on the poetic thoughts of Afzal Shauq's poetry added to the book TWIST OF FATES

FOREWORD

______________

In human history, voices of poets have been doing what swords of rulers failed to do. These voices, chanting ideas of universal nature and  attempting at making a difference for the betterment of humanity, need to be acknowledged and conveyed to all.

I was fortunate, to hear one such voice, of Afzal Shauq through translated collection of his poems by Alley Boling. TWIST OF FATES had every thing to quench my  thirst for good poetry and to satiate my search for splendidness of ideas.333 poems of the book had a variety of themes ranging from alacrity of romantic anecdotes to very serious concern for peace in the world; from quest for an ideal to promoting international brotherhood. Imbued with sincerity, each word, influential and striking, goes straight to the heart. Reading these poems has been a rich emotional and spiritual experience for  me. Having absorbed the aura of brilliance radiated by erudite themes, I felt compelled, to write a critical analysis of the book. For doing so, I tried reaching out the mind and soul creating those poems.

My efforts brought me into kind acquaintance  of Afzal Shauq directly. Knowing him on personal level turned out to be an even cherishing experience. The barrier of difference of our first languages disappeared and I savored the tale of his life, literary ventures, travels and aspirations, which I  insisted upon him to write for the rest of readers as well. I am thankful to him for his kind acceptance of my proposal and I was able to include his short autobiography in this compilation.

In order to admire, recognize and promote his sincere efforts, I have collected, in this book, critical reviews and comments on the writer by famous literary figures, which beyond my expectation ,were countless and all full of praise and admiration. It proves that instead of pinning himself to a specific readership, Afzal Shauq has the ability to colour the world in a shade all sensitive hearts and sensible minds can decode.

I take great pride in compilation of this book and having worked upon the creative venture of a poet, who rose from a remote  Pakhtun valley to international recognition. It is my heartiest desire that all his dreams of peaceful interaction among men come true. I also thank the worthy critics whose works I have translated and collected in this book.

THE PEACE WISHER POET / Heather wilkins
A Wind Swept Day Dedicated To Afzal Shauq

As I pen my thoughts,
and dreams,
Words I cannot say,
I bear my heart to the wind,
On a wind swept day.

May I take a dream, or two,
My dreams involving you.
Blow them to the wind,
Make my dreams come true.

I bear my heart to the wind,
On a balmy day,
May it catch on fire,
And blow your love,
my way. (Poem By: Heather Wilkins)

AFZAL SHAUQ is an unique poet with peace promoting ideas. His poetry delights and captures the emotions of his readers. His approach is effective and inspiring.

AFZAL, is a very accomplished writer. Also a great humanitarian, better known as THE PEACE WISHER POET. His mission in life is to promote peace, love, and brotherhood between all men and nations. We are all in this journey together. What effects one effects all. For this reason, we must all strive to make this a better world in which to live. We are somewhat our brothers keeper. It has been my pleasure to call AFZAL, friend. I can feel him in his work as an artist. May all who pause, enjoy the read.

Dedication Peace Wisher Poet Afzal Shauq

The peace wisher poet, AFZAL SHAUQ,
is on a mission,
Promoting peace and good-will to all men.

He has dedicated his life's work to
helping the poor and needy.
Looking at all creation as equals.

The Peace Wisher Poet, is releasing
his new book of poetry, about peace,
and love for all humanity.
He begs all world leaders come to the table,
Drink from the same cup, taste the same wine.

Tear down these walls that separate us,
and heal our nations.
Start preparing the world for a better tomorrow.

Where we can stand shoulder toshoulder,
In peace and harmony.

If you hear a voice crying in the night,
It will be The Peace Wisher Poet,AFZAL SHAUQ
Calling for peace on earth good-will to all men.

AFZAL SHAUQ, A FIGURATIVE POET / Sunita Devi
“A poet with creativity, sensitivity, and perfectly a human heart
with much peace to offer to humankind”… Sunita Devi

Afzal’s poetry is a combination of intelligence and variants of deep feelings ranging from the simple topic referring to ordinary lives to the much debated theme of war, comprising within its vast compass a whole range of human emotions. Not only thought provocative but also his poetry are capable of creating and sustaining interest throughout the length of his lines.

He is a poet with much deep feel and a humane heart. In short a poet with creativity, sensitivity, and perfectly a human heart with much peace to offer to humankind.

“Blind World”, A metaphorical poem with the theme of death bringing forward the differences that exist in the world dividing people from people. In the imagery of two loves buried under darkness denying from the sunlight explicitly states the meaning of life's brevity...Winnie

“Strange Peace”, A realistic yet engaging way of writing the fact of the various leaders that have came across the face of the world politics leaving behind marks of scars of destruction with development. A piece with thoughts much to ponder on… Winnie

“A Strange Justice”, Beautiful imagery of the will of the justice giving body. In fact, “justice” is really a questionable issue… what’s “ the criteria of justice” and what’s supposed to be put to “justice” .. how and who cares? This is a tragic dilemma of the 21st century I think… Winnie

“Begging Heart”, being poets, our hearts beg for love and remain dry and in thirst without being fulfilled that thirst....is an always moving thirst.....? Maybe answer is big YES. Appreciate your appetite of love which makes you beg from beautiful ones…. Winnie

“Afghani’s Sorrow”, well high lighted the issue and I feel the way you do . so let me say in simple words the sorrow of Afghans and the arbitrary of the alien force… raising questions. What’s right what’s wrong… nothing clear and appear. Any way, poem is Simply excellent and touchy !..Winnie

“Ammanian Girls”, Is this every man's feeling? ...quite unstable....beauty can’t be measured because it depends on the taste of aesthetic senses. Maybe yes or maybe no… Any how, you being a romantic poet has to praise beauty.. what so ever is touching your heart… Winnie

“Confusion of Love”, this definitely is a true and frank lines about the confusion in love. One in love or once in love can truly associated with it... well written and liked the way you added here about the situation you faced in love… Winnie

“Senseless Walls”, Senseless walls are in a way vile disguise to protect one's nation and self. May not be the distance between the sky and heart shortens but it will take ages to gap the distance existing between the hearts of men if man don’t stop thinking that they live and strife for the same reason 'Happiness in Life'. This piece is bringing the utter truth of our everyday life! ..Winnie

“In the Name of Dignity”, A wonderful piece with apt imagery and symbolism.

'In appearance
human beings
But by nature
brutal animals'

The real nature of human beings coming out in the name of various seemingly differences created by man... Winnie

“Broken Hopes”, A new way of putting how one feels when most loving hope happens to break and make us to live with it without our will in it. Beautifully brought out the pain of the heart in the few lines from the depth of a feeling heart… Winnie

Dear Afzal, my following new poem is dedicated to you and to your peace dreaming cause… with regards.

Let be this Way.

When the light of the Sun,
Ruling the sky and the earth,
Fails to give hope and faith,
Let your prayer be your rescue.

When everyone fails,
To be your comfort,
Making you feel lonely,
Let your past moments be your rescue.

When all of your dreams,
Starts shattering into pieces,
Come crashing down on all your hope,
Let your belief in your dreams be your rescue.

When there is darkness all-around,
Blurring your world,
Shadowing your view of your life,
Let your belief in yourself be your only rescue.

WELL DONE! HEY AFZAL !! / Jessica R

(You, The Fellow Believer in Peace)

I love your society-related pieces. They are so profound. Your poem " The Nature of Human Beings" is an example of that. It’s really a perfect poem and again when I read poems like "To My Friend", especially this part

"Full of life's thick blood
So often pricked by you
My blood has thinned to red ink."

It inspires me! and I think Afzal !!! You are so right. We are all related through Adam but we treat each other like we are strangers, worse so enemies. Why can't we all just get along? And why we are always found in fighting like enemies as you mentioned in another superb piece "Misinterpretations" about your reasons against war! and of course we should not be prisoners to our body as you said in poem " Prisoners of The body" , which makes us human and also sinful, that is lust, greed, and all other deadly sins that are so called " human nature" .

Here, I add the idea of your wonderful poem "Satan Wins" because every day is a battle between God and Satan. Now, it is up to us whether we let Satan win or God. But because we are human, he will win the days we don't actively seek God. Appreciate your poetry, it's realistic one Afzal! Simply beautiful...it left me speechless... while you say in "Your Godliness not yet Revealed" beautifully as…

"Almighty God
far off this place you live
away from human existence
in the centuries of journey
the distance between unending
Though the closer I strive
Your Godliness yet revealed."

Amazing! You seem to be touched even by the thought of ants heart breaking .. and say, not to be hurt. Every time I kill an ant (which is very rare), I feel very guilty. After all, they are also one of God's creations as you added in poem "My Peace willing Soul". Well done! As a fellow believer in peace, I agree very strongly with your words in poem "War". Sure, war does not lead to peace, only to more war and killing. I loved the poem "Murder". To be honest, I was hoping you were talking about self-reflection because the person we should be killing ourselves...killing our own selfishness and greed and living for the benefit of everyone. After reading your perfect poem "Oh Almighty God" so what I was thinking last night! There will be some who called themselves God-followers in this life but when they reach heaven, God will say "I never knew you". They talked the talk, but they didn't walk the walk.

I love and agree with your poem " The Light of the Day". As it says in the Bible, those who are afraid of the light love darkness. This is a perfect paraphrase of that verse. Well done! Hey Afzal !! you are really a good and very heart feeling poet. Love the ideas you express…I love this tribute to the beautiful masterpiece, "Mona Lisa". This poem is a masterpiece itself.

"Hundreds of Faces" is a great work. The mirror shattered into a hundred shards in my mind as well as the broken pieces of you. Besides your thought-provoking society poems, you are also a master at romantic verse. "Voice of Face" is beautiful one. But "The Face of God" is everywhere we look. The "Spanish Eyes" deadly beautiful and "The Rose" I see.. Great metaphor work Afzal !

haha. No, we woman can not be subdued like you mentioned about your women in poem "Reverse Effect". We are the ones that rule over men...at least the ones that love us. Poem is done in a good way, raising the question with new prospective. But your respect for women rights in "Love Ends Differences" is appreciable, I wish more men would think like you. It seems that woman always been treated like we were inferior. We need more men to see us as valuable.

Sometimes it seems some of our favorite memories are washed away by the sands of time. Then other memories (the ones we'd rather forget) we intentionally erase from our thoughts but the evidence is still there like footprints in the sand. I don't know if that's where you were going with this piece " Seeking Beloved" but that's what I took from it. And you just inspired me to write something . Thank you! Here, let me dedicate one of my poems to you Afzal !

"Missing Pages"
(Rewritten and dedicated to Afzal Shauq)
____

I was a book with burnt edges
and tattered cover
opened and laid flat
for examination purposes.

You read me out loud
like all my complexities
could be contained in a few
of your stereotypical phrases.

You spelled me out as if
you could predict my actions,
but I will not conform
to your predefined binding.

When my pages did not correspond
with this self-created fantasy
of how I should read,
you violently tore them out.

And when you reached the end
of your criticisms all that was left
was the spine of a woman...
with no content.
