BOOK ONE When Doctor Charlotte Crosby arrives at the resort – an exclusive clinic for psychiatric patients near the ocean – she’s full of energy and expectations. Charlotte’s a skilled physician who’s very ambitious. At the resort she’s given a warm welcome by the staff members and Mrs. Vale – a stern woman in her mid-fifties – who’s running it. Then Charlotte meets Margaux. Margaux’s French. Her husband died on their wedding day in a car accident. Margaux survived, but has been a patient at the resort ever since. BOOK TWO In an anteroom at Ravenwood Prison, Sister Gideon waits for the arrival of Caitlin Chandler. Caitlin has to undergo every humiliating procedure. Caitlin had discovered the lifeless body of a little girl beneath the railroad on one of her early morning walks. Witnesses assumed that Caitlin was the culprit, with the result that Caitlin was convicted for attempted murder. At Ravenwood Prison she will serve a life-sentence. The girl is the only one who might have seen her attacker, but she’s in a deep coma. Caitlin has always maintained her innocence. In prison, she is being met by Sister Gideon. Caitlin clings to the nun, but Sister Gideon cannot prevent the young woman from being harassed by the other inmates and by the personnel. Neither can she prevent Caitlin from trying to commit suicide. Luckily for Caitlin, Charlotte Crosby saves her life. Charlotte gets a sort of a deja vu. A new chapter in her life begins for her.
