There are many rivers that start in Canada and end in the US and there are others that start in Canada or the US and dips into the other country before returning to the country of origin. Water fishing and mineral rights as well as pollution issues have been a point of contention between Canada and the US for over two hundred years. This has led to Indian wars between Canadian aboriginal peoples and Gold hungry prospectors. The Ghosts of Blood River is a ghost story about a river with a checkered past, and a group of collage students going river rafting on the first long weekend of spring. If not for the rivers history its name would be Red River for the red clay that permeates the spring runoff and colors the river water red. Although this is a fictional story, it is based in several true historical events of history. In "The Ghosts of Blood River" Blood River earns its name.

Each spring the souls of the long dead cry out for justice and the waters of Blood River turns the crimson colour of blood. Runoff from the melting snow churning the river waters as if to toll the bell for the people’s blood spilled upon the riverbank. Faces of the ancient people that lived along the river can be seen in the swirling waters crying out to the heavens with dead eyes their ghostly voices bubbling up from the rapids as whispers in the mist. Voices that long before Europeans ever landed in the Americas were spoken loud upon the shores filled with laughter and joy that were silenced by the muzzles of European muskets to feed their hunger for gold.
