Silly Monsters on the Wall                          March 20, 2011

When I was just a “little” one, trying to sleep was never fun.
Just as I’d get snug in bed and gently rest my sleepy head,
across my room upon the wall, I’d see monsters, big and small!
Some were scary, some were funny, a mean old snake or a giant bunny!
With my bravest voice I’d shout, “Get out of here…I want you out!
Get out of here you monsters you! Just what is it you’re trying to do?”
I’d call for Mom, she’d switch on the light,
and wouldn’t you know it… not a monster in sight.
Together we’d look everywhere, in every drawer, under every chair.
But never, never, could we find, any monsters, of any kind!
So with lights on, Mom would stay, until sweet dreams carried me away.
In the morning, bright and early, Mom sat me down and said,

"Listen Girlie, we know monsters are not real, so what’s going on here, what’s the deal?
Together we can figure this out. Of that I am sure, I have no doubt!”

So we decided, once and for all, to catch those monsters on my wall.
We planned for Mom to sleep with me, so she would have a chance to see,
those silly monsters that came at night, but always scurried out of sight.
Into my bed we both did climb, turned off the light and closed the blind.
With nothing but the night light on, we snuggled up and gave a yawn.
But as we turned to face the wall…there they were! Monsters big and small!
At first my Mom couldn’t believe her eyes. But in a flash she realized,
and Mom began to laugh with glee,

”Oh my darling can’t you see?
Your little night light shines just enough, to cast shadows on all your stuff.”

"That giant bunny that you fear, is your rabbit slipper with the torn up ear.
And that mean old snake is nothing more,
than your purple scarf hanging from your drawer.'

How much fun we had that night, making shadows with my night light.
Now at night when I go to bed, there are no monsters in my head.
I am safe and I never fear because I know my Mom is near.
She always helps me figure out, those mysterious things I don’t know about!
