Reaching Beyond the Breaks
Reaching Beyond

This is the heart-wrenching personal saga of a born-again child of God. She has gone through the fire and lived to tell about it. Her account of her personal odyssey to hell and back should serve to help many who are caught up on the same life-style and with similar problems to find THE way out.

A Journey To Hell and Back is a gripping saga of a young woman’s journey from adolescence to adulthood at an accelerated pace. This book is an exploration of a troubled teen’s journey into the underworld to emerge as an independent, confident, and self-assured woman. Pitfalls, tragedy, and trials that lure a young honor student into the mean streets of Atlanta and finally, New York mark the story. Her journey to hell led her through a fiery furnace that burned 70 % of her body with 2nd and 3rd degree burns, and an over three months hospital stay where God provided personal consolation and healing. After God miraculously saved her from a life in the streets heaped with sin, her zeal for God resulted in her making additional mistakes, including renewing the abusive relationship that had almost cost her life.
The story is a modern day version of Dante’s Inferno. Each layer of Hell corresponds with a new low in the protagonist’s life. Finally, from within the very bowels of Hell, she cries out to the Lord for salvation. This spiritual epiphany becomes a turning point in her life, thrusting her forward from Hell. The tremendous suffering and miraculous ending of this book will offer hope and comfort for anyone suffering from loneliness, heartache, or disappointment. It provides a realistic and human perspective on many social topics such as teenage rebellion and pregnancy, domestic violence, divorce, AIDS, substance abuse, prostitution, and the legal system. It is a necessity for anyone who has been a part or will work with any of these populations.

I will lift up my eyes unto the hills from which cometh my help.

In the emergency room, the medical staff continued to ask endless questions. All I wanted to do was pass out. If I understood anything, it was that things would get worse if my uncles knew what had happened that day. Robert had already killed one person, and I knew that he was capable of doing this again. Years later, he would kill his best friend, of more than 20 years, during a domestic altercation, and never shed a tear. I didn’t want anybody else to get hurt. Desperately, I wanted to block everything that had happened out of my mind. After all, everything else ceased to be important. The things that they were asking about seemed trivial. As they continued to ask their questions, silently in my mind I continued,
“Please God let me pass out, but don’t let me die.”
Audibly I continued with one request, “Please give me something for the pain?”
The answers continuously came back, “First we have to gather some information.”
There were no thoughts of revenge in my mind. There was one thing that was important. I needed to find out how to avoid going to hell. Finally, I lost track of what was going on. They must have given me something for the pain.

New Author Receives Rave Reviews On First Book
It has often been said that life can be stranger and more potent than any fiction imaginable. And in the case of Ms. Charlotte Russell Johnson, the statement is brought very close to home. Ms. Johnson’s life, the good, the bad, and the ugly, was recently outlined in her autobiography. Ms. Johnson never considered herself an author, not by any stretch of the imagination. However, after living life dangerously close to the edge, hitting rock bottom, using faith to pick herself up again, dust off the pieces and rejoin the human race – Ms. Johnson is a firm believer that with God’s help – anything is possible.
Ms. Johnson is the new author of a book entitled, “A Journey To Hell and Back” – a personal saga. The book is a strongly written, powerful account of a life that at times is hard to believe, at intervals sad, at time peaks encouraging and overall worth living.
The Columbus native was born and raised in Warren Williams Public Housing. She’s come a long way from her days as an out-of-control youth and a drug dealing young woman.
“Every step I have taken has been a miracle in the making,” said Ms. Johnson. In releasing her book, she had to come to terms with the fact that many people after reading it will never look at her the same again. “A lot of people who know me now, don’t know the Charlotte in A Journey to Hell and Back and I know there are some who will judge me, but that is a chance I had to take.” The Columbus Times, February, 2002

Charlotte Russell Johnson shared her story in a way that was simultaneously provocative and reaffirming! She carried her readers on a well-orchestrated journey with many interweaves of truisms that concern this earthly existence. It is difficult to imagine a person's ability to come away from "A Journey to Hell and Back" without asking the existential question - "What is the meaning of Life?" Surely, Ms. Johnson caused this reader to reexamine the question, and to reckon with the power of the human will to survive. However, Ms. Johnson moved a step beyond survival. She has PREVAILED!! She prevailed beyond her overwhelming yearn for acceptance that this reader sensed throughout her story.
Charlotte Russell Johnson's story is like a nightmare. It reminds this reader of a child's sudden awakening from a nightmare, and the child finds that his mother is there, saying all those appropriate things, like "it is going to be okay, I am here, hold my hand". And when Ms. Johnson awoke from her nightmare, she found God there, and realized that He was there all the time. He was reassuring to her that she would be okay and that she is His child, and thereby, meeting the greatest acceptance of all. Yes, Charlotte Johnson has been to hell. However, more importantly, she came back. Just as the great Shirley Caesar frequently says, "if there is a way in, then there is a way out." If you are not sure, just think about Calvary.
