Excerpt
There are two variations of this technique. One is the short distance roll, where the body is dropped straight down upon the hip of one side and then rolled over the shoulder. The other is a long distance roll, where the ninja steps out deeply to one side, eyes focused forward, and places the palm of the stepping sides hand against the instep of that foot. The body weight is then shifted to that side and rolling is executed along the channel. The key to a good side roll is all about keeping the eyes focused on the target ahead. Tape a line out on the floor and get your line of students to try and roll along it, alternating sides.
Long Distance Running
At the closing of your class, suggest a homework assignment for anyone expecting to accompany one day a mission.
A long distance run, while carrying a 20 oz. water bottle, of no less than 3 miles, 5 for confident students. Water should be held in the mouth while the student runs in a comfortable fashion, and when the mouth is empty, the student will run on the toes with his legs out in front of the body. The bottle should not be empty before the run is complete.
