Spider Webb, aka Kenneth Rice, began playing drums at an early age in his home town of Detroit. He gained prominence as a studio drummer, and was hired on the spot by the lte great recording artist King Curtis. He was the drummer for Harry Belefonte from 1969 through 1972, playing in the main room at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas as well as while on national tours. Spider has recorded with Freddie Hubbard, Robert Palmer, The Temptations, David Clayton-Thomas, Aretha Franklin, Herb Alpert , Grover Washington, Jr. and Hugh Masekela among others. This books tells it all.
We got into our second song and Aretha looked around to see who was drumming. Of course she didn't directly hire for her band and during that session she had no idea the band had a new drummer. She gave me a big smile and I knew she liked my work...
And speaking of big - Aretha Franklin was about 130 pounds then and she danced on the stage! She's put on a few pounds since then, but haven't we all?
