Making of a Yoga Master
Making of a Yoga Master

Completely different interpretation of Yoga Sutra based on a sequence not known so far, making this great scripture a guid-book to Yoga pinnacle.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali were compiled in 300 BCE, predating all other religions of this world. To this day they form the basis of all yogic philosophy, despite the fact that their reference to the asanas (or physical postures), associated with hatha yoga practice at studios throughout the U.S. and all other the world, are mentioned only rarely. Instead, the Sutras (the word means "thread”) are a series of wise aphorisms meant to serve as transformational instruction. They design a way of thinking, a method of practice, a type of relationship to life and others, and practical guidance in both meditation and action. Their goal is union of the individual with God, or atman, which is the ultimate goal of all forms of yoga. Suhas Tambe was introduced to the study and life of yoga through his Indian spiritual master in 1993. The Sutras were integral to this initiation, and he is now a scholar, teacher and long-term practitioner of their esoteric wisdom. He is also the first Westerner to reveal his teacher's knowledge of these sutras' hidden sequence. From the time of Patanjali onward, Tambe claims, the scrambling of the sequence of sutras was a respected tradition. Such deliberate confusion was done with a view to preserving the sanctity of these precious teachings. Since interpretation of any sutra must bear reference to and consistency with the previous and the following sutra, proper sequence becomes a critical factor, a fundamental to the use of this time-honored scripture. The key to the real sequence of Yoga Sutra was handed down verbally by the guru only to the eligible disciple. Far more than an instruction manual, this book is also about one seeker's progression. The author, who began his search entrenched in materialism (he was an accountant with an MBA working in IT), was "transformed” into a devoted practitioner. This path thoroughly changed his life's priorities, evolved his purpose and dissolved old habits in a way that will be inspiring to many. "Yoga not just entered my life,” he writes, "but now, it is my life.” The clear progressive stages of transformation through yoga are documented here. as nowhere else. This new sequence unfolds a practical road-map for knowing and practicing the elevation of the seeker's awareness -from the physical, to the astral, and to finally to the mental levels-and designates observable milestones to determine one's progress on the path. It marries the philosophy of Yoga with clear "how-to” instruction.
Yoga is defined as "union” or "enlightenment,” or as "abiding in pure consciousness.” Does that make any sense to you? Does it sound close to what you are thinking right now, or is yoga for fitness all that matters to you? Is this subject spirituality aligned with your goals even remotely? It wasn't for me for so many years.
For me it started with curiosity; some interest. Friends and well-wishers made many suggestions for exploring my new spirituality, and with a sigh of relief declared "Thank god he is finally there!” To be honest with you I don't remember when my curiosity turned into seeking, though I did not know for quite some time what exactly was I seeking. In ashrams there was alluring peace but also the annoying scent of a "business of spirituality.” I tried to meet some enlightened people; but they appeared to keep a guarded distance. Visits to shrines or temples of deities drew me into a whirlpool of incensed devotees and the manipulative priests. I did learn some rituals and tried to read a few books. Though seeking was alive in my guts, any spiritual journey itself looked hazy because I could connect with none of these things.
Then I met my guru who brought a fresh breeze into my spiritual quest with his awesome smile, easy accessibility and very gentle conversations about deep philosophy. He brought spiritual aspects right into my "normal” life and seamlessly blended the two. He introduced me to Sage Pātańjali's Yoga-Sūtra and gave me a wonderful gift - the real sequence of the sūtras, available nowhere else. Since then I have been reading that masterpiece and assimilating its contents to make Yoga my life. Perhaps my initial encounter with those spiritual celebrities, the rituals and the paraphernalia was only to invite me onboard. But once I was there, that showcase did not help any further in the spiritual journey. I learnt that the quest and the spiritual realization have to anchor in your own self, and not be scattered all around. Nothing outside, howsoever authoritative, is of any use if you cannot absorb it as a part of your own transformation.
Over the years, this process of transformation has also continuously morphed my goals and expanded horizons to make the once completely alien goal of enlightenment real, and in fact, now, the only one for me. To my utter amazement, all help and guidance that I always looked for elsewhere is right here in Yoga-Sūtra; one only has to follow it correctly and tirelessly.

Professional Reviews

By Chip Hartranft
“It is not possible to find an explication of this foundational yogic praxis more detailed, far-reaching, or richly elaborated than the book you have now before you. Without getting entangled in the endless vines of esoterica that have sprouted about the path since the early days, Suhas has delineated the connections that tie ancient knowledge to modern revelations about the universe, both around us and within the inconceivable microcosm of each brain and mind. There is much to learn here..”
