This is a poetic telling about the life of the author, with some celebratory, some sympathetic, often humorous and a few patriotic poems mingled with those of a late life romance.

Barnes &
Richard Lee King, Author

This book is a poetic telling of a love that didn't die with death and that living couldn't extinguish until time brought it full circle.  As the author puts it, "This book is kinda, sorta my life story."  Commencing just moments after his birth, he takes you on an imaginary journey through his childhood, his subsequent 20 year marriage to Christine, her death, then through his struggles to overcome despair and finally to the pinnacle of new love.  You are there from the very beginning, where he states: "After nine months of darkness in a tiny 98 degree room, suddenly it's 68 and very bright, as I come out of the womb.  I've nothing but the air I breathe and not a stitch of clothing.  They spank me on the butt and that really starts me loathing."

As you travel through his childhood, growing up in rural, post depression Michigan, he writes, "We hunted and trapped and fished through the ice.  We squabbled and fought, then tried to make nice."  Later he marries his high school sweetheart and the two of them raise two baby boys into strapping young men, whereupon she becomes fatally afflicted with breast cancer.  He writes of her impending death:  "We weren't really religious, but we learned to pray, hoping that a miracle just might come our way.  With all of my being I tried hard to believe that, for someone this special, He'd grant a reprieve.  Church every Sunday, faith healers and all, hoping that somehow, He'd answer our call.  Then as I stood there overlooking her casket, I had a question for Him, but I never did ask it."

After much soul searching and guilt trips down several wrong roads he finally falls in love with the lady he considers as the equal of that first love from nearly fifty years earlier.  And he writes: "Their paths crossed, like a head on collision.  She could be no more perfect, had she come in a vision.  Had he dreamed her up, to be precise, he wouldn't have dreamed her to be this nice."

You are there as he is "Nearing the End." where he leads off a poem with: "Well, I've been down that road and I've been up the creek.  I'm not over the hill, but I'm getting close to the peak.  If you get what you pay for and you pay for what you get, oh Lord, I've been wondering ain't I done paying yet?"  In his words:  "I'm now in my mid sixty's, hoping to make the best of the time that I have left.  I've met a wonderful lady.  I now look forward to every new day.  That hasn't always been the case, but I believe I'm a lucky man.  There really is joy in "A Pursuit of Life."

To many, this book will be seen as a love story, to some, possibly as a tragedy.  To others the chapter titled, "Life's Lessons" will jump out at you and to still others it will just be a real fun book to read.

Once you've read this work you will find yourself picking it up time and time again just to refer back to one of the poems that was more individually meaningful.  The author laughs, then cries, then lives to laugh again.  You will too ......

I'm 16, hell on wheels,
just got my drivers license.
I hit the road bag and baggage
Ain't seen much of my home since.

I'm 19 & graduated,
waiting to do what's right....
Thought about signing with Uncle Sam,
but I'm not looking for a fight.

Instead I'm off to college
looking for my degree.
At 21, I married my sweetheart
knowing she's in love with me.

I'm 21, legal to drink,
though it will never be a habit.
And when I've had a few too many
I'll either walk or cab it.

At 22, I had a son,
at 24, another.
You just can't raise a boy alone,
he had to have a brother.

By now I've hit my stride
and I've started my career.
We own a house, we're doing well,
we live without much fear.

For nearly 21 years,
I seldom miss a day.
Unless it's for vacation,
or related to work some way.

Although we're not relly wealthy,
we don't want for much.
We have a pretty good life
with lots of toys and such.

We buy a bigger house,
invest some for the future.
We think we've got forever,
but you never know for sure.

Time goes by, our boys grow up,
life is like we dreamed.
Then the diagnosis
and I'm nothing now, but steamed.

She fights a valiant fight,
but it's one that she can't win.
Even though we both prayed
time and time again.

Life goes on, I wander some,
but nothing seems to fit.
My life was near perfection
now I can hardly get a hit.

There've been some special ladies,
just not that perfect one.
Not that I was always looking,
sometimes it was just for fun.

But, now I'm in my sixty's
still facing life alone,
so I try online dating,
trying to avoid the phone.

Immediately I find her,
could this be my fate?
She just seemed extra special,
even before our first date.

Tonight we're having dinner,
we're taking that next step.
It's been planned for several days,
since then, I've hardly slept.

This story has no ending,
it hasn't happened yet,
but for my remaining days
I'll be as happy as I can get.

Professional Reviews

Stephen D. Clifton, US Army, Sergeant Major, Retired
"Well written. I found it very enjoyable reading. Humorous, yet at times it had me nearly in tears. I particularly enjoyed the three patriotic poems in the LIFE'S LESSONS chapter."

Judy Craddock, lifelong best friend of Christine, one of the primary characters and the author's deceased wife,
"I loved the book. It is captivating and reads like a novel even though it is in rhyme...I feel others would find help, comfort and/or encouragement from reading it, just as I did."

Dee Slocum, Author of Daisy, A wild duck story and Welcome Aboard Jack's or Better
"My husband, Jack, says this is a very meaningful book.... As he reads it, he is constantly wiping his eyes. I consider that the best sign of a best seller"
