After a USAF fighter pilot rebels from a bizarre recruitment experience in Houston in 1967, subsequent war events in Southeast Asia motivate him to join the friendly alien group in Laos where he finds redemptive retribution in helping them battle an invasion of Earth by an evil scourge of the galaxies.

Beyond the Eagle

In 1967, USAF fighter pilot, Captain Dan Shelby completes his advanced combat flight school in New Mexico in preparation to join the F-105 Thunderchief fighter-bomber wing at the Royal Thai AFB in Khorat, Thailand to fly combat missions over North Vietnam.  Shelby and best friend squadron mate, LT Skipper Levy then take fun-time leave in Houston, Texas prior to overseas departure.

In Houston, Shelby encounters new people whose prophetic visions have identified the half-Navaho Native American pilot as the one to join their hidden war to protect the world from impending invasion by an evil scourge of the galaxies with supernatural power.

The pilot's bizarre experiences begin with Melea, a Japanese-Hawaiian cocktail waitress in a country-western night club.  That night he and Melea survive an ambush attempt by enemy assassins.  The next morning Melea attempts to recruit Shelby to join her secret group, but he rebels at her bizarre story.  Shelby, however, is astonished to learn that galactic aliens and their space ships really exist as Melea is whisked away out of country for her own protection.  Her memory will haunt him during his tour of duty in Southeast Asia.

When Skipper's aircraft is shot down over Laos, Shelby steals aboard a doomed Army helicopter mission in an unauthorized endeavor to search for his missing friend.

During the ill-fated mission effort, Shelby and one other helicopter crew member are rescued from near-death from the downed air ship by two Japanese samurai in desolate Laotian mountains following a battle with enemy soldiers.  The two Americans are taken to an ancient, lost Buddhist temple complex and are miraculously healed.  The pilot meets Lord Shandor-Ri, a high-ranking member of the Galactic Federation.  He also meets Melea again.  The great lord recruits Shelby to join their group and help them oppose Lucon, Lord of the Void.  Shelby undergoes accelerated training transformation in preparation under the mentorship of the group's master Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese teacher trainers.  Shelby's limits are pressed during this process as he deals with becoming the first human to be transformed with supernatural power by an alien ally.  Afterwards, he must survive a surprise assassination attempt on his life, the romantic attraction to Melea and his first mission to rescue Skipper from a POW compound in the Laotian jungle.

A traitorous act by a handmaiden results in the kidnapping of Melea for bait.  Shelby purses to be drawn in the showdown trap with the evil Lord of the Void.  Though now transformed with supernatural powers, Shelby's valiant battle effort to save Melea must be supported by help from ancestral Indian spirit warriors and the spirit of his World War II pilot-hero father in order to cause the evil one's retreat back into space, thwarting his invasion plan at this time.

Upon returning to his native reservation home, Shelby is guided by his grandfather's spirit to perform a ceremonial thanksgiving act before his boyhood familiar mountain wolf den and the wolves join him, acknowledging his leadership, while his guardian eagle soars high overhead watching.  Shelby's redemption is successfully coming full-circle of his destiny.

Excerpt

Lord Shandor-Ri points with his hand. "I will put you on top of that karst. You will remain there in meditation until you become in harmony with the Light...no matter what happens, or how long it takes. You must become transformed into the Light. To be absent from fear is to be present with the Light."

Shelby has come to terms with himself that he now begins the final part of this training challenge. There will be no teacher present to guide him. He will be on his own.

Standing behind Shelby, the great Lord Shandor-Ri holds up his right hand and begins to move his left hand in a circular motion faster and faster until a visible envelopment of light appears, encasing Shelby's body.

Shelby's body rises one foot off the ground, then the Light energy transports him through the air, placing him on top of the karst. The visible energy field then disappears.

He slowly sits down in a meditation posture. The top of the karst is just large enough to accommodate him. He closes his eyes to enter into a state of meditation.
