From Chapter Two
Shooting Indoors

Photography indoors can almost be described as an entirely different world.  But with a little help it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it can be.  We just have to pay attention again to the lighting, which is different because we don’t have the sun helping us.  We are even more dependent upon the flash and can sometimes even use some extra lighting in addition to the flash to ensure our shots come out very nice.
Consider Indirect Lighting

With indoor lighting we can simply use the flash on our camera, or we can use some additional lighting in order to get the best shots possible.  Floodlights can be used if the situation permits.  But whether using floodlights and a flash or just the flash we want to keep in mind that direct lighting is not always the best.  In other words it can be better to bounce the flash or floodlighting off a ceiling or wall in order to really get the very best shots.  It can make a big difference in providing a softer lighting source that does not wash out the subject.  A little rehearsal or experimentation if there is time to do it can be very good in helping us determine if the direct or indirect lighting will be best.

If the room lighting is very dim it can be quite difficult to get a good shot even using the flash.  With some cameras you need a minimum amount of light for the camera to be able to focus.  With SLRs (Single Lens Reflex) for example, such as the camera I use, the lens focuses on the subject when you press the button half way.  But if there is not enough light for the lens to focus when you squeeze the button your shot can come out blurry and out of focus.

When taking photos at a party it can be socially awkward when trying to get some good shots.  At parties you want to be polite and not be too much of a distraction to guests with your flash.  And make sure you do not become the center of attention by staying to the rear an out of the way as much as possible.  But particularly if someone requests a certain shot of some kind, and the lights are very low we may just have to ask if it will be okay to turn some lights on in the room while we get a few shots.
