Sammi Evans Mysteries

An ex-policeman discovered to be a mole is found shot to death near the shipping docks. The mayor is fuming-- another murder near his reelection time. Then a wife is missing and no one has any ideas what happened to her and why. Sammi Evans is brought in and she realizes the mayor and his wife are in danger but he has estranged himself from her and the police. Can they be saved in time?

A former policeman, convicted of being a mole, is found shot to death. The mayor of Scranton, PA, running for reelection is furious and slams the police to solve this crime quickly to make himself look better. But matters only get worse as an upstanding citizen, wife and mother is missing and all leads fail to bring results. Sammi Evans and her husband, Detective Dave Patterson, are called in. Together, they get results. Sammi has a special talent and Dave knows how to work with her. But how does she get the unsuspecting mayor to realize that he has spies working in his inner circle?

Sammi is brought into meetings and parties that have her mingling with 'Mob' figures and listening intently for anything she can pick up. No one can hide from her, but even so it takes time for her to get all the information. Will it be soon enough?

Sammi discovers the mayor and his wife are in danger. With a plot having been foiled in the past, the 'Mob' is upset that their timetable is falling behind. They must get back on schedule at all costs and the mayor and his wife are in the way. Can anyone save them?

Surprisingly some people show up who were counted out long ago. But will they follow Sammi's lead and save the mayor and his wife, and wreck the stronghold that is being created around the city of Scranton? Is there enough time to bring down this evil group?

Samantha Evans Patterson stood in silent shock as she listened to the midday news on TV. This must be wrong, she thought; Oh my God. This has to be a mistake. She immediately went to the telephone and placed a call to her husband, Detective Dave Patterson.

"Scranton Police Station."

"Is Dave Patterson around? This is his wife."

"No, Ma'am," answered the assistant. "All of the officers are presently in a meeting. Can I have him call you?"

"Yes, please," she said, half in a daze as the put down the receiver.

Again she listened as the TV reporters went over every detail that was presently known. A body had washed up near the Philadelphia shipping docks. The identification wasn't positive yet, but speculation said that it was Terrence Gonzalez, a former policeman who had worked with her husband. He had been convicted of being a mole in the police department, helping in a fraud and money-laundering ring. Terry, as he was called, had been sentenced to four years in prison, but served less than a year as he had given vital information to send known mobster Buzzie Sundrie to jail for murdering a fellow policeman. Terry had only been released slightly less than two months ago.

Remembering Dave saying that Terry had stopped at the police station recently to talk to his former superiors, it was noted that he wanted to go straight. He knew he couldn't be a policeman any longer, and knew the department didn't trust him, but he had been ashamed of what he had done. As a private citizen he hoped to be able to help out in some way.

Sammi, with her unique talent of being able to hear other people's thoughts had spent time around Terry and assured Dave that when he said that he was repentant and wanted to do something positive with his life, his thoughts did match his words. He hadn't been given any assignment that she was aware of, so she was surprised that he had been found killed near the docks.

The phone rang, disturbing her thoughts.

"Hi Sammi, what's up?"

Dave's voice could always calm her down.

"I heard the news about Terry. You already know, right?"

"That's what our meeting was about. We were actually going to start giving him small assignments, after you found out he was sincere. He wasn't on anything official yet, but had heard about something and I think he was trying to find out information. We figured that's what got him killed."

"God, I was so shocked. He just got out of jail."

"And he was pretty lost as to what to do. After you confirmed that he really wanted to do good, we were going to slowly start working with him. Now he could have been a mole for us and with you around, we could keep a check on him. But somebody got to him fast."

"Did he drown?"

"No, he was shot, execution style, through the back of the head."

"How horrible. This one got to me. I know he was a mole, but ... Are they absolutely sure it's him? I mean, is it a positive I.D.?"

"Afraid so. Hang in there, I'll be home in about an hour. Relax, okay? We'll talk about it later. I've got to go."

Reader Reviews for "Thoughts Can Be Murder: A Sammi Evans Mystery"

Reviewed by m j hollingshead 7/11/2010
Enjoyed the read: mini review Following the good-natured, and at times bemused Sammi as she struggles to maintain her equilibrium as soon to be wife, bank employee, friend, and concerned citizen against the needs of the police and others around her for use of her ability to actually hear the thoughts of others and lead to solving of exceptionally baffling cases is set down in readable fashion by a new writer who has now produced three books, and surely as several more already filling her thoughts.

Drouillard’s characters are nicely developed, completed with enough detail to make them very believable, with the nicer folk very nice and very likeable, while the rogues tend to be downright rascals. Hard hitting dialogue, is pithy, convincing, and spot on. Settings are filled with enough description to draw the reader into the setting, hold interest tight and keep the reader turning the page.

Your Thoughts Can Trap You, a Sammi Evans Mystery is an absorbing tale as we follow Sammi Evans across nearly 300 pages to a satisfying conclusion.

Not for everyone, those who prefer a situation begins, and continues right through to the last page will not be so fond of a meandering tale comprising several varying situations. Those who enjoy interwoven tales, as I do, will find much to like on the pages of Jeanne L Drouillard’s Your Thoughts Can Trap You, a Sammi Evans Mystery.

Happy to recommend Jeanne L Drouillard’s Your Thoughts Can Trap You, a Sammi Evans Mystery.
