Call to Assignment

“Why are we here?” is the question that Call to Assignment addresses. In order to answer this, it argues that God has drawn up a blue print for each one of us. Our purpose in life is to discover what this blue print – our ‘assignment’ – looks like and to actualise it, using all our skills, abilities, determination, faith and zeal. This does not preclude having worldly goals if this is where our talents lie. But these worldly goals should be pursued only with a view to fulfilling God’s greater plan. The essential is that each individual should discover and carry out the plan that God has assigned to them in order to actualise His divine vision. This is why we are here and this is where we will find self-fulfilment. However, this is not always easy – there are prices to pay and obstacles to overcome. But, Call to Assignment inspires readers with scriptural examples and insights into the human condition in a way that makes this pursuit become the only reasonable course of action. Moreover, to help those along this course, the book is full of practical advice on how to set about discovering ones assignment and preparing oneself for the task of realising it.

Excerpt

JESUS PRAYED TO EXECUTE HIS ASSIGNMENT
To think that the only man in the history of humanity to be conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of a virgin had to often spend quality time praying in order to fulfill his assignment is to be advised on the indispensability of prayer in our quest for fulfillment and divine approval. Prayer is simply talking with God; remember: it is not talking to God but with God. Talking to God is a one-way traffic or a monologue, whereas talking with God is a two-way traffic, a dialogue, a communion, or fellowship with feedback. It is assumed by most people that Jesus did not have to do much in order to carry out the Father’s assignment by virtue of his divine connection. But the scriptures are inundated with the many instances that Jesus had to resort to prayer. He often withdrew himself from the public in order to pray. Mark said of him: “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed” (Mark 1:35). Luke also said of Jesus: “And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed” (Luke 5:16). Matthew said of him: “And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone” (Matthew 14:23). Prayer could never be separated from the personality of Jesus. It was an integral part of his persona and character. Before he did anything significant, he prayed. He was the one who laid down the basic parameters of prayer. His model for prayer is the most comprehensive ever known to man. Today, the Lord’s Prayer is recited by most Christians without the consciousness of its depth and reach. A careful and meditative appraisal of this model prayer reveals a profundity that touches on the things that are dear to the heart of the Father.
Prayer is like rainfall in a dry land. It softens the ground and prepares the terrain for cultivation. Without water, the ground is as good as dead. Destiny thrives when you are in constant communion with the assignment-giver. Constant communion with the Father leads to clarity of thought and sound judgment. It is like a radar or compass that guides you to the desired destination. Jesus clearly understood this divine principle and utilized it to propel his destiny. Before embarking on his ministry, he set out to pray in the wilderness for forty days and nights; before ministering to people, he fortified himself in prayer; before embracing the cross, he communed with the Father. Christ gave birth to his assignment in the closet of prayer. Constant prayer is the key that activated the potential that he carried within from birth. Show me a man that is serious about his destiny, and you will find in that man a praying heart, just like Christ.

Call to Assignment - Review
In this short volume, Kingsley Y. Amoah presents a model for personal fulfillment that will inspire and motivate readers towards the attainment of their full potential. However, Call to Assignment: Engaging the Keys to a Fulfilled Life is not to be placed on a bookshelf next to other self-help manuals and life guides. Amoah's vision reaches far beyond concerns of material well-being and wealth - although it does touch on these issues. This book provides a view of self-fulfillment as being inextricably intertwined with the fulfillment of God's desires.

Amoah begins his exposition by posing perhaps the most fundamental question facing all of us: why do we live? His answer is that God has set out a blue print for each one of us, and that our purpose is to attain this. This blue print is the assignment of the book's title. With our ‘call to assignment’ we must identify how we can best show the glory of God, given our individual skills and abilities, and this must be done fully and faithfully. In completing our assignment, Christ is the model by which we must be guided.

The book is full of guidance about, not only the general principles of finding our true purpose in life, but also about the specific tools that we can use in order to decipher our assignments as well as practical advice about how we can reach fulfillment.

Amoah points out, with great honesty and frankness, that the fulfillment of ones assignment is not necessarily the easiest path to follow. There are many personal prices to pay and there are many obstacles to overcome. But it is only by paying these prices and conquering these obstacles, and, moreover, by cultivating ones faith, that one can discover the plan that God has prepared for each one of us and strive to realise it. It is only then that a person can achieve true self-actualisation.

Call to Assignment ends by describing the characteristics that typify a person on an assignment. By anybody’s reckoning, these include many traits that are bound to lead to a happier and more balanced life. And for readers who, after reading the explanation of the notion of assignment, wish to formalise their quest towards its fulfillment, Amoah offers a set of practical steps to follow.

This is a truly life-enhancing book. For those readers who may feel challenged by some of its demands, Amoah offers clear, well-argued responses that are all supported by his vast knowledge and understanding of scripture and that testify to his acute understanding of the human condition.
