The Sum of it All
The Twilight

Short Summary
The Sum of It All –Book 1 ‘The Twilight’ is about a small child beginning to develop his awareness of the world around him during the early days of the Second World War and the strange incidents that propel him into his young life.

 The Sum of it All

The Twilight

 Description
The saga begins with an old man dying of cancer in a hospital.
As he drifts in and out of a coma, he slips back and forth between the present reality and his past life.   Now in his last days he relives the same events as when he was growing up, but in the context of an adult’s mind and understanding.
Not only does he relive his experiences, but melts back into the young boy that he once was in his formative years during his unconsciousness.
A strange dream that he experienced in a meadow where he went with his grandmother for amusement keeps reoccurring during the stressful moments of his ordinary life.
It doesn’t take him long to loose his childhood innocence when he come in contact with the death of a Russian soldier in his favourite place in the meadow. He begins to experience a new odd emotion. ’Hate’.
For the first time in his life during his trip to Germany he comes in contact with bigotry and some dark secrets of the nazi regime that are not solved for him even though he tries to get the answers from the adults.
The Saga takes the reader through the child/man experiences during the Soviet invasion of his native land and subsequent deportation to Nazi Germany and Dresden.
The story should interest any teen or adult who wants to delve into the encounter of a child and the disruption of his small life by war and violence as well as the continual confusion that one so young suffers during such events.
The realistic presentation the constant changes and violence, whether psychological or physical illustrates how such an experience, begins to change the child’s character.

Excerpt
The creatures as by magic had vanished from around him, so he looked back towards the ‘end’ of his world. The boy concentrated his gaze on those dots in the sky and realized that they were slowly moving toward him. As the points got closer, they got larger and the spaces between them became wider. He could distinctly see that the dots were really four riders coming fast toward him. He sat up in the grass frozen in a trance of fear and fascination staring into the distance.
