"The Sword and the Dragon"
When the Royal Wizard of Westland poisons the king so that his puppet prince can take the throne and start a continental war, a young squire is forced to run for his life carrying the powerful sword that his dying monarch burdened him with from the death bed.
Two brothers find a magic ring and start on paths to becoming the most powerful sort of enemies, while an evil young sorceress unwillingly falls in love with one of them when he agrees to help her steal a dragon's egg for her father. Her father just happens to be the Royal Wizard, and despite his daughter's feelings, he would love nothing more than to sacrifice the boy!
All of these characters, along with the Wolf King of Wildermont, the Lion Lord of Westland, and a magical hawk named Talon, are on a collision course toward Willa the Witch Queen's palace in the distant kingdom of Highwander. There the very bedrock is formed of the powerful magical substance called Wardstone.
Who are the heroes? And will they get there before the Royal Wizard and his evil hordes do?
Whatever happens, the journey will be spectacular, and the confrontation will be cataclysmic.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Overall The Sword and the Dragon (A+) is an impressive debut - a traditional fantasy that manages to be fresh. It succeeds in offering a complete reading experience. See the full review here: fantasybookcritic.blogspot.com --Fantasy Book Critic
Fans of Tolkien and CS Lewis will find much to enjoy to enjoy in M.R. Mathias' debut fantasy novel. This is a big book, with a steady flow throughout. Read this book. Take up your sword and get ready for a hugely enjoyable adventure. --Book Smart UK
I found myself going "wow" more than once reading the first two books of this trilogy. Each book tells a great complete adventure. -- E. J. Weatherby Anchorage, AK
This is an epic fantasy, and I do mean epic. This book is LONG. I'm talking 200,000 plus words, here. Probably three times as long as Harry Potter. A fat fantasy, the kind you would expect from a Jordan or Tad Williams. One should not be put off by the price, because you do get your money's worth. -- Bestselling Author, B. V. Larson
"You've (Mathias) already achieved much, much more than so many people who like to think of themselves as writers." -- .Gollancz The Deputy Publishing Director of SF, Fantasy & Horror list of the Orion Publishing Group.

What author Michael Mathias has achieved is the creation of a story that moves vividly and unconsciously through 900+ non-stop-page-turning pages. And like watching a movie, you get sucked into his utter escape from reality from page 1.
The outside world evaporates.
Without losing voice, passion, or spirit the author drops out of the writing and the adventure takes over with cliffhangers, rites of passage, beloved characters, conflict, heroes, deep woods, passionate loves, and did I mention cliffhangers?
It is a story for both men and women. Mathias knows how to create riveting battles and hardcore action, as well as hot encounters that draw you into the lovers' heat as if your own sex drive is knocking on the door.
I read this book about 6 months ago and the characters are still with me. I am waiting for a work hiatus to dive into book two of the trilogy. Thank you Michael Mathias wherever you are!

This review was originaly posted on the first edition from 2010. It was an awesome story then, even better now that its been well polished. This huge novel is good as any fantasy I've ever read... Better than most. I purchase book 2 imediatly upon finishing. Kings, Queens, Heroes, & Fools (The Wardstone Trilogy Book Two) If you love real "EPIC" fantasy then don't miss this!
