Excerpt

Eric managed to get a few hours sleep in the cage before he was needed back in the bullpen. He was finding it more and more difficult to push her out of his mind. He went to get some coffee.

“Stiles,” Lug said, breaking through his churning thoughts.

“Hey, what’s up?” he replied as he grabbed is full cup of coffee.

“Trace on the box of blood came back,” Lug said.

Eric walked to his desk. “And?”

“They found a piece of hair in the box sealant.”

“Were they able to get a name?”

“Yeah,” Lugow started as he looked down at his desk in hesitation. “It came as a match to a Veronica Naltin.”

Eric froze as the name hit him in the chest. “What?”

“Yeah,” Lug replied as Eric took a deep breath. “We double checked. There’s no mistake.”

“Jesus,” Eric said as he leaned on the desk, his mind spinning uncontrolled.
Adam appeared and looked at him. “You told him?”

“Yeah.”

“So now what?” Eric asked as he tried to reign in the fear that began to bubble in his stomach. They were not only dealing with a stalker, but now a ruthless killer.

“We start from the beginning,” Adam said as Lug nodded. “We look at everything from both cases.”

“We should look at anything that’s happened since this guy made first contact with Rebecca,” Lug suggested.

“Do we have a date?”

“The only specific date I have is two weeks before the teddy bear,” Lug replied as he looked at his notes. “I will try and get something more specific.”

“Where is she now?”

“Donna’s,” he said with a deep breath.

“Is she going to be safe there?”

“She’ll be fine for now,” Lugow added.

“Okay, let’s get to work,” Adam said.
Eric’s phone rang. “Detective Stiles.”

“Eric, we have a problem,” Charlie said, sounding panicked and out of breath.

“What’s going on?” he said, looking to Lug and Adam.

“Rebecca got a message from the stalker.”

“When?”

“I little while ago,” he replied.
Eric’s heart began to race.

“We think he’s going after Donna.”
“Why?”

“I don’t now. Something about the message.”

“Did you hear it?”

“No.”

“Let me talk to Rebecca,” he said and then heard Charlie pass the phone to Rebecca.

“Eric,” she said, sounding terrified and shaken.

Eric got to his feet as Adam followed him. “What did he say?”

“Uh, it was a joke.”

“A what?”

“A knock, knock, joke.”

“Tell me exactly what he said, Beccs.”

“Knock, knock, who’s there, Donna, Donna who, Donna turn around ka-boom,” she said into the phone.

He could hear the agony in her voice.

“Where are you?”

“On our way to Donna’s office.”

“Okay, let me talk to Charlie,” he replied in an even tone. He heard her pass the phone back to Charlie.

“Hey,” Charlie said.

Eric and Adam reached Adam’s car. “Have either of you tried to call her yet?”

“Yeah, she’s not answering, but Beccs said she had an early meeting.”

“We’re on our way to Donna’s office as well, but you need to stall and keep Rebecca away until I tell you it’s okay.”

“That’s going to be pretty hard to do.”

“Listen to me, this could all be a way to lure Rebecca out into the open,” Eric explained as Adam pulled onto the street. “Just stall long enough for us to make sure it’s safe.”

“Okay,” Charlie agreed before Eric hung up.

“What’s going on?” Adam asked.

“Rebecca got a message from the stalker.”

“What kind of message?”

“One with a ka-boom.”

Eric, Adam, Lug and the bomb squad arrived in front of Donna’s office twenty minutes later. Adam coordinated the sweep and evacuation of the building while Eric went looking for Donna. He stepped off the elevator and flashed his badge to the receptionist. “Detective Stiles, I need to speak with Donna Smith, it’s an emergency,” Eric said as the woman looked at him in confusion.

“I thought you were meeting her in the parking garage,” the woman replied.

Eric spun, dashing to the elevator as he called Adam. “She was called down to the parking garage, I’m on my way now,” Eric said into the phone hitting the P on the elevator.

The doors opened moments later, and as he stepped off, he saw Donna leaning against her car with a look of irritation. “Donna!” he called out to her.

She shifted, looking.

He ran toward her.

“Eric, what’s going on?” she asked as she moved to meet him.

Eric heard a door slam just to the left.

“Is Beccs alright?”

“She got a call from the stalker. He…”

“Donna!” Rebecca called as she ran toward them, Charlie in tow.

He realized that Rebecca was going to pass right in front of Donna’s car.

“Beccs, no!”he screamed, pushing Donna behind him just before the car exploded.

The blast pushed both he and Donna off their feet as it shattered and sprayed glass across the parking lot. Eric recovered and bolted upright to see Rebecca and Charlie flat on the ground...

They meet again and Eric realizes that this mysterious woman is his brother’s girlfriend, he must stay clear but his heart and body tells him differently. Rebecca can’t stop thinking about Eric, there worlds collide on a whirlwind of events. Rebecca is being stalked by a killer and Eric is her knight in shining amour. Will his loyalty to his brother block his focus, will he peruse Rebecca’s as his heart desires, his macho man exterior has gone to butter and he finds himself drawn to her but he must stay away - but does he?
Rebecca is haunted in so many ways by this serial killer, no one knows why, and every turn he seems to have been there.

I must say this is the first book I have read in Amy's series and thoroughly enjoyed it. Just the right amount of romance to equal the thrills and roller coaster ride. I was on the edge of my seat, reading swiftly to just find out what was next. The thrills and suspense was fantastic, the romance very real and electrifying. These parts I found very realistic. The storyline flowed smoothly, giving the reader that right amount of smexy, sexy stuff, and of course the suspense was riveting. I was so intrigued with this book I read it from beginning to end in one sitting and delved into book 2 the same day.
Amy has created a realistic world, of love, hate, and life. Experiences we all go through in life I am sure. The characters created were realistic ... Eric's character is torn between his loyalty to his brother and his magnetic connection to Rebecca - is she the one? Rebecca’s plays the damsel in distress, but by all means she is a strong character but one can only take so much. I enjoyed her character, honest, and strong, yet also self dependent and very caring. A romantic thriller I would defiantly recommend to all.

Michele 'n Jeff Reviews 4 out of 5 KISSES!
At first blush the opening scene is romantic, but by the time I’d reached the bottom of the first page I realized that this was NOT going to be your run-of-the-mill story, suspenseful or not. In fact this story could rival some of the freakiest, aka bloody, gory and scary-as- all-get-out, stories that I’ve read. And while there is a fair amount of violence, by and large the story is mostly one of often gut-clenching suspense. But if you’re at all squeamish, then this may very well not be the book for you.

There are many different layers to this story that, at first, seem to be completely unrelated but, and you guessed it, are actually very closely tied together. The manner in which Amy J. Romine goes about illuminating the background and the multiple connections is intriguing to say the least. Each block carefully built on top of the other until the structure is irrevocably one piece. The many divergent events slowly begin to coalesce and we begin to see the whole picture...or at least as much as the author is willing to show us. Can you say tease? Ms. Romine certainly knows how to do it.

There is one part of the book that I think deserves special mention, and that is the seduction scene between Eric Stiles and Rebecca Gailen. It begins in the second chapter and I don’t recall ever having read such an enthralling and lengthy, but oh-so...Yowza!, passage. What Ms. Romine treats us to, and I do mean treats us, is 30 or so pages of sensuality and eroticism that covers the range from attraction to hot-and-heavy action. And all I could do was read on and marvel at the depth and the tension wrought by the author as we played voyeur. In fact I’m still in awe of her achievement.

Ahem... okay, back to the review.

Some of the characters are extremely likable; for me these are, in particular, brothers Eric and Charlie Stiles. But I also really like Mindy, Rebecca’s assistant. All three of these people are not only easy to like, but I found a lot in each of them to admire. Their loyalty to those they care about and their interactions with those around them all show them to be people I would be pleased to call friend. But I must admit that I have a deeper liking...okay I’ll call it what it is...an extreme attraction to Eric. There’s something about him; not necessarily mysterious, but he’s not someone that can be pigeon-holed and he’s very much his own man. Definitely an attractive man...read more at Michele 'n Jeff - http://bit.ly/difZgf

Serenity Lost, where to begin...
First I'd like to say the author Amy Romine, is without a doubt a very talented lady. I don't want to ruin the story so I refuse to give a detailed account of what I read. The evil presence and back story add depth, and force the reader to wonder what's really going on. Trust me, much more lies just under the surface. A perfectly executed read!(less)

Reader Reviews for "Trust Me Book 1 - Serenity Lost"

Reviewed by Jeanie Fisher-Ritchie 4/15/2011
I loved this, beginning to end, I read the first and couldn't wait until the second, thought I was going to have an brain bleed waiting for the third! the first book Serenity sets up a strong foundation. The relationships are realistic and yet romantic. The struggled (not to give anything away) are heart felt and I truly ripped apart at their pain. A strong heroine that I can say I am proud of, she takes her punches, now if only there were someone to hold her. She doesn't need protection, she needs warmth and solace from the nightmare. Wow, I should do this for a living! LOVED IT! READ IT NOW, Mr Romine will gain popularity fast I guarantee it!
