Lessons to Help You Confront and Conquer Your Fear of Public Speaking
Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking
Why are people fearful of the thought of speaking in public? What practical steps can be taken to be freed from this stifling fear?
The answers to both questions are contained in the book by Dr. Gary Rodriguez titled, “Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking.”
The fear of speaking in public has derailed many careers and silenced countless voices. There are some things in life that are inevitable like death and taxes. However, the fear of public speaking is not one of those things.
Overcoming the Fear of Public Speaking offers twenty practical lessons designed to help you confront and conquer the fears associated with public speaking. In the earlier lessons, you will learn to understand the origin of your fear, in other words, how and why it began. While the later lessons will offer practical tips and tools to help you enhance your communication skills. In addition, each lesson concludes with journaling exercises intended to provide intermittent times of reflection and insight.
If you struggle with the fear of speaking in public, you are not alone. However, you need to be silent no longer because of this fear. The tools you need to overcome this fear are available to you. You do not have to be captive to this fear any longer. The question before you is simple. Are you ready and willing to confront and conquer the fear of public speaking? If your answer is yes, you have come to the right place.
This book was birthed out of my concern for those gripped by the fear of public speaking. So many people carry a message that will never be heard because they are too afraid to speak in a public setting. Not writing this book would have meant giving in to my own fears that whisper, “One small voice cannot make a difference.” I reject this devilish counsel! I am convinced that I can make a difference, even if it is just for a few.
This book is designed to empower people to freely speak their hearts and minds. You may be much more important than you may realize in the large scheme of things. You are potentially a difference-maker to someone who needs to hear what you have to say. You were given a voice and a message.
You may share many messages that will impact many people, or perhaps just a few. Whether you seldom speak or do so hundreds of times is not my concern. My concern is that you speak when it is your time, and that you never allow your voice to be muted by your fears.
Until now, some of you have limited your advancement because you refuse to speak in public. Others have refused to take a certain class because they know it involves public speaking. Still others have missed the opportunity to bless a son or daughter at a wedding or graduation because they couldn’t bring themselves to speak in front of a crowd. There is no need to live this way.
You can choose to confront and conquer your fear of public speaking. The very fact that you are reading this book proves that the desire to overcome this fear resides in you. But how do you climb this ominous mountain?
Herein you will find lessons designed to help you conquer the fear of public speaking. However, before you begin, realize that it will take some real effort on your part. I cannot just wave a magic wand and make your fear go away, and neither can you. On the contrary, this will involve a somewhat painful process designed to help you confront and demystify your fears related to public speaking. As you progress, you will begin to replace old toxic thought patterns with new thinking patterns that will change the way you approach public speaking.
If you thoughtfully and carefully read the lessons contained herein and diligently do the journal exercises I suggest, you will at least minimize, if not conquer, your fear of public speaking. If you don’t believe me, just try it. What do you have to lose? Perhaps, only the fear that has silenced you for so long.
