Help with Alzheimer's

Alzheimer's touches so many lives and in America alone over 6.3 million have Alzheimer's.  My book is a nonfiction personal memoir of my experiences caring for both parents who died of complications from Alzheimers.  When mentioning writing a book on the subject of Alzheimer's to others, it seems everyone is touched in some way by this disease, for this reason I believe everyone could benefit from reading My Parents' Passing.  It would surely open the eyes of those who want to be enlightened, to those who wonder if their loved one may have it.  The book chronologically addresses Mom and Dad's disease from early onset in identifying the disease to sighting the medical steps as I go.  I show their progression through the 10 warning signs that is put out by the Alzheimer's Association, and then escalating care to each of their last days.

Book Review for Earlene Cummings-Lamnek – My Parents’ Passing

Earlene Cummings-Lamnek’s My Parents’ Passing is an emotional and riveting personal memoir depicting, from early onset, the devastating and life-altering impact of Alzheimer’s disease. Seeking God and His Word for guidance, Earlene strives to not only educate the masses about Alzheimer’s but also give hope to others in her situation and point them toward God during these troublesome times.

Essentially, the biography describes how Alzheimer’s turned her mother and father, a man of God and pioneer in starting Baptist Churches throughout America, into “distorted personalities of her dear parents that were unrecognizable.” From a medical standpoint, Mayo Clinic defines Alzheimer’s as “the loss of intellectual and social abilities severe enough to interfere with daily functioning.” Though there is no cure yet, medical science has advanced enough to predict early onset using a spinal fluid test that has 100% accuracy.

Earlene’s website is an excellent source for information on Alzheimer’s, vital warning signs that should not be ignored, and a section devoted to those who care for and witness the stressful decline of their loved ones. The following excerpt about her father depicts a sentimental scene that demonstrates one of the ways that Alzheimer’s disarms the individual: “I remember times asking Dad questions, and he would come out with the weirdest answers. You could see him searching his mind for the words.” Seeing your parents, who raised you and instilled within you the Christian values, in such a helpless state is truly agonizing. Citing Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight,” Earlene’s message to others surrounded by the disease is clear: turn to God for guidance and protection.

Ultimately, Earlene’s purpose in writing My Parents’ Passing is three-fold: to put her story into writing for her own family—so they have memories to hold onto; to educate the masses on just how detrimental Alzheimer’s is to a functional lifestyle; to show that God’s grace makes the trying process easier to endure. All in all, Earlene Cummings-Lamnek’s My Parents’ Passing is brutally honest and heartwarming, a thoroughly moving read.
