Author Becky Ayers

One Wisconsin summer, Cammy Dawson; the quintessential 16 year old high school student fell headlong into a belief shattering crisis.

A family gift has been bestowed upon 16 year old Cammy Dawson that she isn't accepting very well. The gift of being a sensitive and coming in contact with beings that have left this world, or never were a part of. Dealing with the new problem was bad enough, but having to do so with her younger bully of a sister Tara, made it even more unbearable for her. Tara didn't believe in the afterlife, let alone anything Cammy said and enjoyed harassing Cammy about her experiences. Cammy's  friends Nan and Sky finally decide to help her, seeing how much it has changed her personality from bubbly to depressed and knowing how frightened she had become. They all work together to solve the problem by conducting ghost hunts within the Dawson home; hoping to shed some light on the disturbing messages that Cammy had been receiving from the "other side". Will they figure it all out before Cammy loses her mind or is she doomed to continue living the rest of her life with her new found Unwanted Gift?

Excerpt
"Are you a family member of Cammyís that passed on?" Nan asked of the unseen spirit that she believed was trying to contact her friend.
Cammy and Sky glanced around the room as if they were worried that something creepy was going to make them jump out of their skin.
"I donít hear anyone, do you?" Cammy asked quietly of Sky.
"Nope, but Nan knows a lot about this weird stuff and maybe sheíll find something, you never know."

Nan wandered around Cammyís house asking assorted questions, hoping to get an answer.
"Okay, I covered a lot of area here. Letís listen and see if I caught anything."
"But I didnít hear anything Nan, so I donít think youíre going to hear anything on there." Cammy said to her.
"No Cammy. You donít understand. Spirits voices are not normally heard by the human ear. Most of them are on a different frequency and can only be heard when you catch them on a digital recorder."
Cammy shook her head. "Nan, I told you I heard the voice with my own ears! It wasnít a recording. So obviously if that was a spirit, you CAN hear them with your ears." Cammy insisted.
"Yeah I know, but like I said most of them arenít heard with the human ear. I didnít say all canít be."
Nan turned the digital recorder on and the girls all sat and listened to her asking questions and waiting to see if anything or anyone answered.
They listened for a good 15 minutes with nothing out of the ordinary heard. Then when Nan asked the question 'what is your name'? they all heard a shocking answer. A voice of a man said 'Tobias'. All of them put their hands to their mouths as they gasped. The voice was so clear and obviously the low voice of a man. There was no explaining it. "Oh my God! Did you hear that??" Sky yelped as she jumped up from the couch.
Nan grinned. "See. I told you! Digital recorders pick up voices and sounds that we canít hear."
Cammy was stunned. Not only did she hear it, but it was the very same voice she had heard that dreadful day.
"So, Cammy whoís this Tobias?" Nan asked her.
Cammy sat there on the couch looking like she had just walked out of a horror movie.
"I donít know. Iíve never heard that name before, but that was the voice I heard that day. Guys, this is really freaking me out."
"We have to listen to the rest of this recording and see if we got anything else." Nan insisted.
"Wait. Give me a minute." Cammy said as she felt a cold chill cross her body.
"Cammy, it was just a voice. You donít need to be this freaked out over it." Nan said to her frightened friend.
"No.I just felt something really cold. Did you guys feel that?" She asked both Nan and Sky.
"No, but hang on a second. Let me get my gun out."
"Gun?!" Cammy shouted.
"Oh, not that kind of gun. Itís just called that because of its shape. Itís basically a thermometer. You check the temperature throughout the room, and when you feel a cold spot, you check and see how much colder it is there. A drop of temperature in spots where there isnít air conditioning pointed or something, is usually a sign of a spirit." Nan explained as she showed her how it worked.
Nan walked around the room and got a base reading of 78 degrees.
"Okay, itís roughly 78 in here. Now let me check where youíre sitting."
Nan moved closer to Cammy and noticed the temperature dropping considerably.
"Cammy, get up and walk to the other side of the room." Nan said.
Cammy slowly got up from the couch and walked to the other side, wondering if she was being followed.
As Nan checked the temperature of the area where Cammy was sitting, she could see the warmth of the cushions, but all around it was a cool 67 degrees.
"Whoa! Thereís something standing right here!" Nan said with excitement.
Sky ran over to see what she was talking about. She could see the readings change from 78 in the rest of the room to a chilly 67 by the couch.
"Thatís just creepy!" Sky said trying not to panic herself or Cammy.

Professional Reviews

Love conquers all, despite unwanted gifts!
Cammy Dawson's relationship with her younger sister couldn't be more strained. When eerie things began happening to Cammy, her sister Tara figured Cammy was just milking their parents for attention. That accusation couldn't have been farther from the truth. The gift Cammy unexpectedly received from their deceased great grandfather wasn't one of her choosing, and her sister's refusal to accept the gift as based in reality further strained their already rocky relationship, that is until the two of them ended up in a situation where their lives depended on one of them. Becky Ayers has painted a vivid picture of mystery and danger behind Cammy's unwanted gift, and depicted an accurate assessment of sibling rivalry between teens during a phase in their lives when sibling rivalry seems to become the norm. Bravo, Ms. Ayers for an exciting story with an unexpected, emotion packed ending!
