Personal Revelations

Thousands of people have read the "Conversations With God" books by Neale Donald Walsch. But despite the inspiration that these books offer, one question often remains ... How do you translate such spiritual wisdom into the realities of day-to-day living? Douglas Hughes takes us through these "New Revelations" from the point of view of someone - a lot like everyone - who blends a bit of spiritual introspection with a truly fascinating memoir. This intriguing book brings the wisdom of the "CWG" books into a familiar and personal perspective.

Discussing the origins of this manuscript, the author tells us:

The name of this book was inspired by a profound story from the author Neale Donald Walsch as described in his book: The New Revelations – A Conversation with God

It is one of several Conversation with God books that Neale has written, and I recommend them all. But this particular one inspired me in a different way - it prompted me to take action.

I will always be grateful to Neale for his willingness to put on paper the words he heard God speak (despite the controversy that created), and so inspire me to write about my own life experiences (not quite so controversial).

One of the more profound ideas discussed by Neale is the notion that God and Life are the same thing. In Neal’s book, God actually encourages us to read our various Holy scriptures aloud while substituting the word “Life” for the word “God” wherever it appears in the text.

In Personal Revelations, I have experimented with this idea. God’s revelations (extracted form several different sources) are interpreted as observations about Life.

In this book I do not claim to talk for God (or Life); but I do talk about God/Life in a very personal way, and with a familiarity intended to share the sense of intimacy I feel with a divine presence, whatever we may choose to call it.

Ultimately, my goal is simply to share with others, as reader and writer, a journey we can enjoy together, and that hopefully deepens our mutual experience of at-one-ment with Life.

It is this unity with Life that defines the personal revelation which gave birth to this book – a brief moment of creativity. And I hope that it inspires you to some similar creative act, whatever form that might take.

It is through our efforts to express our own unique creative impulses that we experience a connection with divinity and ultimately with the source and spirit of Life, in all its glorious manifestations.

Each of the "new revelations" becomes a window for looking at how such issues manifest in the course of every day living. Douglas shares with us a memoir that focuses on the challenges we all face in transforming our lives. In this book, such a journey is revealed in the example of a not so very special, yet highly personal and intimate life story to which we all can relate.

In the Forward to his new book, author Douglas Hughes begins:

"As far back as I can remember, I wanted to be older and wiser. When I was 10, I wanted to be 20. When I turned 20, I thought life would be better at 30. As I approached my third decade, I dreamed of having the wisdom of a 50 year-old. And when I finally reached the half centennial mark, I began to wonder how much more fulfilled I might feel with 80 years of living behind me.

But each succeeding milestone has also been a reminder that as we grow older (and hopefully wiser), we increasingly lose a little more youthful innocence and perspective about the world around us. And with the loss of that innocence, there is also the realization that we cannot go back again.

What we once accepted as truth can sometimes look like ignorance when seen in the context of the world we share today. At such times we are tempted to relegate these past thoughts and beliefs to a box we put on a shelf in the dusty corners of our memory. It is simply labeled … “youth”.

Occasionally we open that box and look through its contents with a messy combination of embarrassment and humility and fondness for what often seems to have been a simpler time - softer and less demanding that the world today.

And yet, in a curious case of alchemy, the magic of time can transform the truth of youth into the sage of age.

There comes a day when we reach the inevitable realization that there are fewer nights ahead of us than behind us. It is then that we search for something to give us a sense of immortality.

Eventually, I could no longer put off the inner drive to create something that would remain when I was gone.

I knew it was time to write.

This book takes us on a fascinating journey. Part memoir and part philosophical inquiry into life's most challenging questions - the same ones that sooner or later seem to surface for all of us to look at - it explores these questions by examining the kinds of decisions we each make everyday in the course of ordinary living.
