A useful addition for the teacher looking to introduce students to the oral tradition that inspired our greatest works of art and literature.

Christopher Mansour

Myths are examples of the greatest stories ever told. Their impossible circumstances, famed heroes, and villainous gods have influenced literature, films, paintings, poetry, and sculptures. Adapted for teachers and students, and designed for introductory courses, this survey of Egyptian, Greek, and Native American myths provides carefully chosen selections from three cultural histories. From Osiris and Set, to Raven, Old Man, and Athene, teachers will be able to structure lesson plans, student projects, and reading schedules for units on comparative or individual mythology. In addition to its rich selections, Mythology in Context offers critical remarks and an introduction to the history of myth and each cultural mythology while drawing fruitful connections between them. Mythology in Context is a useful addition in the teacher's arsenal.

To help make this collection more helpful for students and teachers, I have divided each chapter according to the distinctive cultural groups and included a summary to explain the methodology of my selection. I have drawn useful parallels between Ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Native American myths to illustrate archetypal connections that transcend cultural and geographical boundaries. These connections should be useful for teachers looking for segues into comparative mythology and for source material for oral and written compositions. I have concluded each chapter with a suggested Reading List for locating source material and useful items.
